Re: knitting petals help
OK, you cast on 36 stitches and then knit a row as normal.
On the next row you knit the first stitch then cast off the next four stitches (by knitting each stitch and then passing it over the next one) this gives you one stitch at the beginning of the row and one stitch after your casting off, then knit another (this gives you your group of two mentioned in the pattern) and cast off 4 again and repeat to the end where you'll have another sible knit stitch at the end of your casting off. When you join it to the beginning, by drawing the yarn through, it'll give you another group of two stitches.
It'll look like x----xx----xx----xx----xx----xx----x on your needle.
Clear as mud? Give it a try, if you have to pull it back it's not a major problem

Re: knitting petals help
I know that this wasn't what you were asking for, but if you wanted to carry on with the flowers I got a FABULOUS book out from my library at our knitting group
Called 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet by Lesley Stanfield its got super simple to quite challenging designs and there is even peas on the pods and carrots! These are SO cute.
Both my little girls have flower names, so its been keeping me rather busy!
