funky yarn sea monster

Post: # 145568Post mrsflibble »

my darling little godson, Hayden, (as seen in a tomato hat...) is 5 weeks old. he is very interested in bright colours, and last night I couldn't sleep so I used crochet as dope again.... perhaps the psychadelic yarn wasnt right for trying to get myself to drop off, but it made a very nice companion to the sci-fi radio play i was listening to on bbc iplayer on my laptop.

AAARGH! it's a sea monster snuggler!

the head was made with a 3mm hook so it's a nice, tight weave. getting the safety eyes in was a bugger so I am hoping getting them out is impossible. I gave it a good chew to make sure. they felt fine. I had a choice, these eyes, one large, green eye or normal wiggly pupil eyes. after much deliberation and fiddling (and one ruined wiggly eye from me biting it...) i decided the black ones looked best.

here is an above shot

(the first star I have ever made which properly lies flat!!! all guesswork, no pattern!!)

I even fitted a squeaker, the circular crochet holding it in wasnt showing up too well against the background, so i photoshopped this one...

so I sat crocheting this little sea-dude with the sole intention of passing it on to the tiny little dude in my life. the very small, hairy one who smells of baby lotion.....

unfortunately i didnt take my camera to Katie's house today, but honestly this thing kept Haydeydude quiet for aaaages! if he wasnt licking it, he was just sat staring at it!
his daddy picked it up to take a look at it and hayden's little bottom lip began to tremble, he then wailed loudly. his daddy placed the monster back where hayden could see it and hayden was quiet instantly. I see a connection!!!

Hayden also responds really well to the squeak. wiggles and a smile. I used a 2" squeaker cos it was easier to get a sound out with a gentle squeeze than the 1" squeaker i had. like the eyes, this also conforms to British Safety Standards (BSS) so it is safe.

the yarn i used is fully machine washable too 'cos hayden's a bit of a sickie baby, and it's stuffed with washable, BSS filling.

anyway, i got the little sea-dude finished, took some photos and then shock! horror! he wiggled off and started eating all my stuff! he had a go at my monitor, keyboard and even my flipping gameboy colour before i shoved him in my handbag in preparation for today... i have created evil!! He appears to only eat electrical items though so I am sure Hayden is safe. I've told Katie to hide the cable remote.....!!!

(yarn was 77p for 500g in the hobbycraft sale, went back today and bought another 6 balls cos it's sooo nice to work with)
