Thanks for the warnings, I'll just repot the pumpkins and sweetcorn for now then, they are getting too big for the seed tray, and concentrate on getting at least the potato bed and possibly the carrots/onions/leeks etc. bed in this weekend. This is assuming the key to the allotment site arives in the post today.

just read your post for the first time , how exciting, i hope you love every minute of it. taking on an allotment years ago was once of the best moves i ever made, it, quite literally changed my life!!!

couple of things . i was interested in the guy not keeping up with his three plots!!! no wonder , thats a commercial amount of land no individual surely would need more than two plots , and even at two you must be a very very dedicated gardener, and damned hard worker with a good strong back  where i had my allotment we had the allotment police , commity members who walked round all the plots once a month and if things looked too out of hand had a word with the owner . actually it worked well , plots were never left untended, and if someone was struggling the commity got people together to help them out.

i hope you have such a great time . it looks a wonderful plot, im really excited for you . by the way, grow butternut squash. really easy , and such a reward for a newby to allotmenteering. enjoy

I've also recently got my first allotment.Bit behind as my left hand will not work properly but most of the weeds are cleared...I round all the stones raked in a pile under the nettles yesterday! Saves me clearing the whole plot of them! Going to use the nettles to make plant food :-D If you get those onions in they'll fly on, made me feel much better seeing somethind edible whilst i was still fighting the weed jungle!

While it has been over a month since I was offered the plot, it took the council two weeks to send out the agreement, and I've still not got a key for the site.
Fortunately the site is pretty busy at weekends so getting in hasn't been an issue, and I have managed to start clearing the mass of brambles down the first third, and started digging out all the roots. I have been putting pictures on Photobucket in case anyone wants a nosey, the link is in my sig.
Going down there again to finally put a bed or two in tomorrow. I have a mass of pumpkins, squash and sweetcorn in seed trays begging to be planted out, and borlotti, runner and mangetout to follow. Going to go with some three sisters action this year and then concentrate on getting the rest of the plot ready for serious planting next year.
