Help - any herbal cold rem.s that a 15 month old could have?

Post: # 151383Post Mr and Mrs luvpie »

Right come on help me with some ideas of meals for master luvpie (15months), normally he is a good eater, everything and anything that isn't nailed down will be eaten, however in the past week he has gradually gone off the majority of things that I've tried him with.

Normally I wouldn't worry, in fact I'm not worried about him now I'm getting annoyed instead, it's fine not wanting to eat your breakfast, feeding you lunch to the cats and then picking at scraps for tea, but don't then wake up constantly through the night because your hungry!!!! :angryfire:

So come on inspire me with some ideas, I know that it is only a short term thing, he is full of cold and teething, but boy does it get draining when everything you offer him ends on the floor and then you end up sitting up with him half the night! Today I'm trying the wait till he asks for food technique, he has been up for 90mins and normally would have had breakfast by now, but just isn't interested - he normally follows me to the kitchen and stands by the cupboard or fridge wimpering like a little hungry puppy, but he hasn't gone near the kitchen at all. So if nothing else help my empty mind come up with something new for the cats to eat off the floor

Poor little guy,he must be feeling grotty :(
I don't think it will really matter what you put infront of him if he's decided to avoid food for now.Even the softest stuff for the teething side of things will probably get launched in the cats direction!
My youngest is going through the same thing at the moment(10 mnths)and he too is waking at night so i've even had to let him have the odd early morning milk feed to settle him.He has managed some wheats with a little milk this morning but his nappies were still awful up until last night so i assume his tummy is still a bit gripey.
As long as they are taking liquids in they'll survive on very little food for a good week. They're just hell to deal with in the meantime!
We're opting for trying soup at lunchtime......i guess it would be a good idea to put the dog out :laughing5:

I hope he's more himself soon x

These are the times when I use the sorts of foods I wouldn't normally dream of, being a good isher >tongue firmly planted in cheek!< How about Alphabetti Spaghetti or something similarly kiddy-geared, just to get his interest? Or cut a slice of ham into his initials. I used to cut DD's sandwiches into funny shapes with cookie cutters, she loved that. Would he have any interest in getting covered in ingredients head to toe and helping you make something semi-nutritious like carrot cake muffins or banana muffins? Or how about a banana milkshake? Soup in a cup? Eat outside/picnic? Think of something green/red/blue to eat or something that starts with the same letter as his name? Hope you find something that helps!

Ok so far in the food stakes me, the cats and the chickens have benefited form toast, plain, marmite, peanutbutter, shreddies, banana, ham and ginger nuts and having thrown them everywhere he is now back in bed, with a  beaker of squash - yes I know but the poor little sod is constipated as well now, so i need him to drink something!! I would have loved to try him on some ice cream but he is very very independant/difficult and will not allow amyone to feed him, so if he can't pick it up it gets thrown anyway.

But since getting up this morning he has also gone spotty so once he's had his nap we are off to the Drs

He did however manage to keep down alittle tiny bit of chocolate  so we are going to have a healthy teeth rotting day just so that he has something, and I've made some jelly for later in the garden.

Ok so got back from the Drs and been told what I thought, he has an upper respiratory tract viral infection, which has caused the spots, my concern was that the spots are spotty for 2 days then drying out looking like eczema(?sp) so apart from capol and something like E45 there is nothing we can do. Poor little thing sounds like he is loosing his voice now, she says trying to feel sorry for him, but secretly thinking that if he does then atleast he won't wake everyone up tonight

So today he has had chocolate, cheese puffs and half a scrambled egg - god am I'm normally such a sick in the mud for making the kids eat their veggies!!!

But to slightly alter the post is there anything that I can give him herbally wise that might help him feel alittle better or help this bug clear alittle quicker?

If he's bunged up and mucousy I'd lay off any dairy products for a few days.

Boost his vit c intake with anything you can get him to take. Ribena lollies will give him vit c and soothe his throat.

A drop of lavender, somewhere in his room, well out of reach - just on a cotton ball - is anti-viral and will help him sleep. If he's really hot you could put a drop of peppermint on it as well - just one drop though.

Thank you for that Maggie, I'd put some lavender in his room, didn't realise that it could help with anything other than sleep, so you've taught me something tonight (not hard to do considering the amount I actually know about herbal remedies!). He has been having orange juice this afternoon, and unfortunately/fortunately depending which end you were at, at the time, that has helped with the constipation :pukeright: His temp doesn't seem too bad, but then he is taking calpol near constantly as he is so grumpy, but I'll get some peppermint tomorrow as a just in case. I also might treat him to the ice lolly depends how good he is for me tonight!!

I so wish that I knew these things, in fact what would be a good started book to read for me, I dream of having a remedy garden and using all homeopathic treatments, but just don't know where to start!

Well the croaky crying has stopped, so fingers crossed he'll have a good nights sleep

The good thing with children is that no matter how floppy, snotty and poorly they seem, they bounce back so quickly.

I don't know of any books on herbalism or homeopathy specifically for kids but there are several good aromatherapy ones.

Shirley and Penny Price have written one - as Penny trained me I'm probably not totally impartial, but she is incredibly knowledgeable, so I would recommend it.

Keep up the fluids and he'll be back on his feet in no time.

Maggie you'll be glad to know that the lavender worked a treat on me, unfortunately not on George, who was up for 5 hours through the night  and the 4 hrs sleep he did get after that was in our bed tossing and turning, but having sid that the nose slugs seem to be clearing up, and he is actually sitting next to me tucking into sausage and happy faces potato cakes, thinking that all his christmas' have come at once, as there is not a sign of fruit or veg. I know he isn't better yet as still grumpy as hell, and his poor little face is now covered in dry patches from the spots, but we've had no new spots appear yet today so fingers crossed he is over the worse of it now.

I intend to smother my pillow with lavender oil tonight, and leave him in the capable hands of mr luvpie and my mother

Don't overdo it with the lavender!

It has a very strange, paradoxical effect - in small doses is very soporific, in large doses can be very stimulating  You'll be bouncing round all night with George if you're not careful

Just 3-4 drops is sufficient.

Glad he's perking up, he'll soon be running round again. Funnily enough sausages always cheer OH up when he's feeling poorly - must be a boy thing

Don't worry, just so you know I ended up using half a bottle on Mr Luvpies pillow (although he still managed to sleep through) and a sledge hammer on George!
