hi from a wet south wales

Hi all my names Paul I live just outside Merthyr in S Wales where its tipping down. Two yrs ago I couldnt decide what to do with my front garden its only about 12ftx8ft, so I had a brainstorm. I thought lets put some veg in there (the back garden is in constant shade). I ended up with radishes,strawberries,spinach,carrotts,onions,leeks, and cauli, and also quite a few flowers which went in any container i could find. This yr I got some spuds in plus beetroot carrotts,lettuce and dwarf beans. I have really got into it and its surprising what you can grow in such a small space, the look off people walking past when they see the veg is quite funny (apparently im known as Tom Good now. Anyway been looking at your site and really am quite interested in the homebrew section (aint we all lol) and general homemaking ,fasinating. Im even thinking of planting a hop plant in the back garden but need to find out a bit more on it yet (does it like shade etc). Anyway thats a little about me, by the way im a bricklayer (work has been real tight down here) nothing about. Thanks for a great site .

its not that nice but its a start lol. wish I had a larger plot tbh, Its funny as you get older you intrests change. I done nothing in school hated it but now i really like my history etc even joined a metal detector club few yrs back amazing whats left in the ground. I can just imagine being told when i was 15 ish that one day I would be doing sort of thing. I would think they were on drugs lol

Hi Paul and welcome ! I have been making my own beer ( " Old Skullcrusher ") for some years now and have often thought about making it the 'real' way from the original ingredients so would be very interested in how you get on !

Hi Rob I must add that Im a complete novice, I want to try the nettle beer recipes, ginger beer etc that I found on here. I think im too late for hop plants this yr what I read is that they are available from March to April for growing on, anyone with any advice or links would be most welcome. This rain still hasnt stopped has it.

Looks good! Have you had any problems with passers by nicking things, especially strawbs?

I can honestly say that nothing has been touched in the two yrs I have been doing this, and when you realise my fork hoe rake are out there also plus a Belfast sink . In all fairness to them the kids dont touch them and the front wall is only 18" high

That's good to hear! Saw a brief bit on Chelsea Flower Show last night with several front garden displays, one of which was all edibles. They didn't really show it properly though, typical.
