Poorly tums and bums

Post: # 154440Post growingthings »

The Smallest (13mths) has been suffering from chronic diarheoa for the last couple of days, so bad in fact that she has been passing blood

I've been to the docs, and they said they would just treat the symptoms and if it doesn't improve then to bring her back, so shes on diarolytes and has canasten HC for her backside which yesterday was so raw that she wouldn't even let me touch it as she was anticipating how much pain she would be in :(

She's been out of her nappies all day yesterday and since she got up this morning and there is a noticable improvement, but it got so bad as she was at one point passing bile and stomach lining with blood :? , so even without a nappy she was being burnt through the contact. She is more her usual self today and I am beginning to feel a bit happier about the situation, but still apart from the fresh air options does any one have some pearly words of wisdom to share with me, The Tallest NEVER suffered from nappy rash, probably because she has skin you could scrub with a brillo pad like her Dad  , but the Smallest has exzema and sensitve skin, so I guess nappy rash will happen even on a clothies baby.

Sorry that became a ramble, but they always tend to when they are about your offspring?!

I second the live yogurt, I recently had severe diarrhea and couldn't eat anything... then a nurse told me to avoid fibre and sugar. I doubt that is any help to you... sorry.

Have they told you if it is dysentery? Which isn't uncommon in small folks, but beware as it can spread really quickly. Maybe time to get the anti-bacterial hand-wash out. I was cleaning the sink and toilet with bleach when I was ill, not taking any chances with spreading it.

Glad to hear that her bum is getting better, I think the fresh air is the best option. I got some really good nappy rash cream from Weleda, natural stuff with calendula, and you only need a tiny bit, it is great stuff.

aww hun :hugish: to both you and the wee one! How about letting her have a splash in the kitchen sink with some warm water and a drop of lavender oil in - the should sooth her poor bot and give her some fun to cheer her up - as well as you. I do hope she's feeling better soon

Oh so sorry for you all, hope things improve soon.
I would go back to the docs you now have a different situation with the skin which needs to be dealt with. From experience when DD1 was teething many moons ago she had blisters and raw skin which would not heal whatever, and of course urine on raw skin ouch,so took her back to docs who prescribed hydrocortisone, OK its not the best option but it will very quickly heal, in hours for us and things will be back to normal, hopefully.
Best wishes

That cream is fab, make sure you get the nappy cream and not just the regular calendula cream, it needs to have zinc oxide in it to work as a barrier.

Oh bless her. If it's happening after meals, it does sound as though it could be an intolerance of some kind, as a bug will just carry on through an empty tummy IYSWIM - has she had something 'new' that might be causing the problems? Even a different brand of a product you normally buy might have some rogue ingredient in it. Plus the fact she has excema means she might be more likely to have other allergies/sensitivities.

When Ellis' bum was sore to the point of his writhing with agony, we were prescribed Timodene cream which was excellent (Metanium was far too stingy and too 'rough' to apply); but I found that luke-warm baths with a tiny bit of sea-salt (literally a quick grind of the mill) and a couple of chamomile teabags really seemed to help as well. Even just wiping the area after 'the business' with a clean flannel soaked in warm water, salt and chamomile seemed to really cool things down. Then a dab of Timodene or, when that ran out, a raw egg white left to dry on the skin, but I'm not sure if that would be OK if she has excema.

Lots of big huge huggles are also the order of the day!

As a Coeliac myself I have fully in mind the allergies sentivities thing, the docs all think that i am being paranoid but I couldn't bear for my babs to go through the (not) fun that I had before I got my diagnosis.

The teabags in the bath is a good one thanks Citizentwiglet, shes been nappyless since it started and her skin is healing really well, shes all scaly and dry now so even though its obviously healing I am concerned that her skin doesn't go the other way and dry out!

I wonder if we'd have all been such enthusiatic parents if we realised that at one point in our parenthood 85pc of the conversations we had were to do with our childrens bodily functions?
