Radiant energy experiments

Solar energy, wind turbines whatever it is then here is your place to talk about it.

Radiant energy experiments

Post: # 156832Post bax2dx »

Has anyone played with radiant energy? I have started some experiments with radiant energy collectors and so far have been able to get readings of 5v however i am not too happy that this is from the atmosphere as it could be from induction ie mains.

I will try and take a drive out away from any sources of manmade electricity and take some more readings.

What does radiant energy mean in this context? I'm not familiar with this. Are you hoping to collect usable energy or is this more about health monitoring?

Sorry for not explaining about what i am doing, not about health but a source of electricity which is all around us although in small amounts. The idea is to store the electricity in a capacitor then once a high enough amount is store it self discharges to ground via a battery.

Its early days here and i am also limited with space to put up lots of wire up outside, i shall see what happens over the weekend and if anything comes from it i shall post my results.

If I understand, you are hoping to harvest the energy in the electromagnetic radiation that surrounds us. A bit like the way a wireless collects a very small portion of this energy which forms the signal from a radio transmitter.

I think it might be quite difficult to find a place where no man made radiant energy is present, especially given the prevalence of mobile phones and radio stations in the UK and elsewhere. A lot of non man made energy comes from the sun and most of this gets blocked by the Earth atmosphere. Light is a type of radiant energy and can be collected by solar panels. I've not heard of anyone trying to collect other types of radiant energy before. Hence my curiosity.

If you are using wire to collect this energy I assume you are hoping to collect from the long wavelength end of the electromagnetic spectrum. This would generate and alternating current the wire. To collect this energy in a capacitor you would need to turn it in to non-alternating (direct) current. Radios do this using a diode and, temporally at least, store the energy in a capacitor, so I think the method is sound. I'm less certain how much energy you are likely to collect though.

Have you though about how much energy you expect to collect this way, or is this more of an experiment to see what is possible?

Yes its totally experimental, radiant energy as i read is from more than one source as you state RF and the sun along with static from long wire aerial type collectors.

The idea is to collect the electrical energy from more than one source but at the same time from one one collector, of course as i said its experimental and as the age old saying goes nothing ventured nothing gained!

Oh i did not mention i have a good interest in aerial technology as i am one of those radio ham geeks who has had shock from the air.

There was a thing in the paper this week about a new-model mobile phone doing this sort of thing to charge itself. A few years away from the market AIRI.
