I've been meaning to sign up here for a while, but finally gave myself a kick this morning!
I've been passionate about organic, seasonal local food for a while (I set up Veg Box Recipes a few years ago as a result, but don't run it any more).
But I haven't been able to grow much while I was renting for the last 2 years (in the contract that I wasn't allowed to change the garden in any way - duh!)
Some major life changes mean I'm now in at the deep end, though, on our quest to go self-sufficientish.
We've got (in no particular order):
2 young boys
6 hens (13 weeks old)
2 walnut trees (about 100 years old)
6 large veg patches (jungle-quality at the moment)
10-15 apple trees (we keep finding more)
4 pear trees
4 gooseberry bushes
1 fig tree (cut down to the ground by the previous owners in March, but looking hopeful of recovery)
Our action plan for this year is to tame the wilderness a bit, after a couple of years of neglect.
Then, next year, we want to start things like an asparagus patch and adding soft fruit canes.
We're really excited to be able to start living our dream, but hopefully not too deluded on the work that will be involved!
I'm really looking forward to sharing the journey with everyone.
What's your journey been like, so far?
What are your favourite bits about going self-sufficientish?
Love and seedlings,
Clare, Peter, Louis, Theo xx
