broken butternut squash!

Post: # 158693Post tanyatom »

hi everyone! i have a bit of a problem... when i went to get my butternut squash plant in from acclimatising for the the day, i accidently dropped it and the bottom of the stem snapped :(
it was still attached a little, so i quickly repotted it in the hope it will re-root.
am i wishful thinking? is there anything else i can do to help it or is it a lost cause

Squash are tough. Good chance it will survive. I've had them mostly eaten by slugs (including the growing tip) and they'd just bounce back. Does take a couple of weeks though.

Keeping fingers crossed, Jandra

A lot of squash will root from the stem as they are sprawling over the ground, so I don't see why it shouldn't do as long as you have buried the broken bit by planting it deeper than it was before. It is worth a try anyway so let us know if it comes back to life! Good luck.

Squash are really quite amazing, I have an intermittent mole problem and every other plant it has burried under has died, the squash went yellow, shrivveled up, looked dead then :flower: up they came fighting for more  - Even in this steaming hot dry weather!
