Big hello to everyone from Retford, Notts, UK!
Hi everyone,
Im Mike, please excuse the mad username Im into retro VW's and it's the same name I use on the forums for them!
Im a 24 yr old married guy with 2 little boys, as said I live in Retford, Notts. I bought the house we are in now about 2 years ago and it's a new build, not the most inspiring property but a foot on the ladder none the less!
The garden here is not massive but I like to think I have utilised the space I have very well, I have a small veg patch approx 6ft square, a 6x8ft greenhouse and use raised beds for my aesthetic planting, however I've tried mostly to choose plants which have other uses & mix herbs in with the flowers too! I bought James Wong's book about growing your own drugs & got a lot of ideas for planting from that.
So in theory I have a part of the garden I use for remedies etc and a part I use for food, aswell as being able to sit out there and enjoy just having a garden as oppose to an allotment!
The foods I grow tend mostly to be salad items as I eat salad almost every day I love it & also a lot of veg that I use mostly for soups actually because i eat alot of those too with my job being so on the go they are easy to grab when im at work and just take a couple of mins to cook or I can keep em in a flask etc.
I guess I've joined up because im interested in learning about fungi foraging & also to share tips/advice about gardening and producing good food on the cheap!
Unfortunately no room for chickens here but hopefully one day I'll have somewhere in the sticks with enough room for a few rusty VW's and some chickens!
Mike

Hiya Mike, and welcome!
I can just see an old VW bus re-used as chicken house...
Oh, btw - I'm not into retro VWs, I've just bought a very new one (Polo Bluemotion). But I saw an old bus here the other day - I think it was on OLD K reg... My, what a beauty!

LoL!
Thanks to everyone for your warm welcome! Yes some of us youngsters are keen on it, especially us hippy types! I guess I started growing because I wanted cheaper, better veg for my wife, kids & me so it's simple really!
Although I must point out that I do not condone the use of drugs whatsoever & I do not use them myself (anymore) it was actually growing my own weed whilst I was at college that got me into gardening in the first place. In a roundabout way I guess it was my first taste of 'self-sufficiency' - Some friends and I (fed up with paying over the odds for rubbish) decided to have a go ourselves, we experienced varying success in a local park over 3-4 years and then it fizzled out as these things tend to as we matured but a love for growing had been born in me & I soon turned to a more legitimate means of getting my fix (salad greens!!!).
Not sure about using an old bus as a chicken coop because they are worth so much now in any state! A friend of mine has an old golf with no doors which he uses as one though. I must say I think it looks rather cool! And its better then it going to the scrap man I suppose!
