OH and his ish projects
I complained (very mildly) about our rather hideous TV stand one afternoon. That evening OH disappeared down into his garage and I could hear hammering and planing. A few hours later he came back with this! The materials used were four pieces of the trunks from our mammoth Leylandii trimming exercise and a couple of bits of left over pine pieces, plus a couple of chunks of maple he picked up from our local woodland path. Total outlay? Zero! I think it looks great, a huge improvement on the monstrosity we had. I'll be waxing it when I drum up the energy (too hot here to do anything at the moment).

It looks much better since I waxed it this afternoon too...
Ina, we have this TV for some very strange reasons. We don't have one in the UK because OH has a "thing" about the BBC and licences. And when we lived full-time in Spain we didn't have one, even though they have no TV licence. But A TV licence is part and parcel of your taxes bill in France unless you don't have an aerial - when you can claim exemption. It doesn't matter if you have no TV, the aerial (or dish) is the crucial part. As we have a dish on the very apex of our very tall roof which was installed by the previous tenants it almost broke OH's heart to have to pay a TV licence here. We don't have any ladders tall enough to get the dish down ourselves.
Then a couple of months ago an English couple in a nearby village just abandoned their house and handed the keys to the bank (something which is happening quite often with ex-pats living in the Eurozone at the moment). Someone in the village did the house clearance and couldn't get the TV to work (not surprising as it is an English TV which is not compatible with the ordinary French system). We actually found it dumped by a bin in our village awaiting collection by the rubbish van. So we hauled it home and when we were back in the UK last October I bought a digibox at our local auction for £6. So now we have a spanking TV receiving UK TV stations. OH is happy because he watches Match of the Day and I'm happy because I'm a Classic fm fan.

Re: OH and his ish projects
You don't have to justify the TV, honestly - I was just saying the table would look good even without the telly on top! And I'm sure you are not the kind of people who have the blimming thing on 20 hours a day...
I had an aerial in the last house I lived, too - which, of course, made the licence people very suspicious. Never had a TV, never will have one (OK, ask me again when I'm 90), and, like you, I really didn't think it should be my job to climb up the house to remove the aerial... Stupid system, that, in France. The previous owners should be obliged to remove the aerial, if you don't need it.
