We have a Poppie and a Nanan
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

I'm Granny Bron (short for Bronwen) and the other Granny is Granny Janet. Not what I'd choose, but hey ho, what's in a name? pbf.

I like the German (I think) Oma and Opa
my Mum was Nana but always wanted to be Grandma, now I've inherited Nana, and trying to live up to it

Re: What do your grandchildren call you?
My son has called me by my first name since he was a very small child, although I sometimes used to hear hom refer to me as his mum when speaking to his friends, even when he was a very small child. My daughter called me by my first name until she turned 18, moved to the USA and started calling me Mom -weird! Both of them called my mother Grandma and my Dad by his first name on my side and each of their grandparents on their father's side by their first names (my ex had done the same, something I found quite extraordinary when we met in the early 1970s). They each call my 96 year old Grandma by her first name, Leah, whereas I only occasionally refer to her as grandma Leah.
Now my grand daugher calls me Grandma although I have only ever signed anything to her in my first name. rfer to myself by my first name on the telephone to her and sometimes don't realise she is speaking to me when she calls me Grandma. My son thinks I should feel privileged to be called Grandma so I let it pass but I prefer just my first name. Strangely he and his girlfriend as now Daddy and Mommy to their daughter so we appear to have come full circle!

I had a nana and a grandma, my grandsons too young to call me anything at the moment but I've let it be known that I want to be called nana as grandma or grandmother sounds so old.

Re: What do your grandchildren call you?
My late stepfather was Grumpy to all his grand children which I think is rather cute, but your OH has already discounted that! My mum, being their step grandmother, was just called by her Christian name which suited everyone.

Re: What do your grandchildren call you?
My eldest daughter has slow speech development, and could never manage Grandad so she called my Pop Bannit and its just stuck. My mum is either Nanny or Nanna depending on how she feels. She also has a Grandad Ray (my husbands Dad) and a Great Grandad Romie, first names are useful when there are 'extra' generations about!

Re: What do your grandchildren call you?
Only been nanna/nana & granny in my family so far but we called our grandfather grumps and in honour of him & to keep the name thats what my son will call my dad.
I searched high and low for different names for my mum but in the end she wanted nana.

Graye, did you want them to call you by your first name or was it something that just happened naturally?Graye wrote:My son has called me by my first name since he was a very small child, although I sometimes used to hear hom refer to me as his mum when speaking to his friends, even when he was a very small child. Re: What do your grandchildren call you?
I've never liked the term Nana. I don't know why, I just don't
I used to call both of my grandmothers Nana when I was little, then Grandma when I was older. It was like Nana was the baby term for Grandma. Both my Grandfathers died before I was born, but I suspect I would have called them both Grandad.
My children call both their grandfathers Grandad (although sometimes they refer to my father as That Miserable Git). They call my mother Grandma, and OH's mother Nana which was her choice.
When the time comes, I want to be Granny, because I think that conjures up a warm, loving, embracing image of a caring old woman with grey hair and a shawl around her shoulders, and that suits me just fine.
How about, in your situation, Mim and Pops or something like that? Sorry I'm not much good at things like that, I really just wanted it to go on record that I want to be called Granny - later in life of course!

Re: What do your grandchildren call you?
Penny Lane I'm not sure how this came about really, they just followed their Dad's example and I didn't mind. And it certainly made life easier when you were with a big gang of children all calling for their Mum or Dad!

Re: What do your grandchildren call you?
We are lucky to still have great grannnies for my children, so we have an Omi (pronounced Oh-me, my grandmother is Austrian), Gee-gee, Ghany and Gran.
Re: What do your grandchildren call you?
My 3 year old halfsister calls her grandad Nonno, and her mum's step-mum Nonna, which respectively is Granddad and Grandma in italian. Just an idea that you don't have to stick to names in the english language.SusieGee wrote:I was having a conversation with my eldest daughter this week about children (she hasn't got any yet but is hoping), and we got on the subject of grandmothers. Now I don't really feel any empathy with being called grannie, grandma, nanna or nan and thought there must be loads of other names that grandmothers can use other than these - so...... if you are known as something different in your family I'd be really interested to hear.
Also my OH is not her dad and so technically won't be any future grandchildrens real grandad (he's not keen on the whole grandchildren thing at the mo, thinks he's too young!) and almost certainly wouldn't want to usurp the real one, so in these circumstances what would be a good name for him to be known by do you think? (please keep it clean!) I suggested grumpy but he wasn't too taken with that.
As for your OH, as long as he acts as the grandfather figure to them, technically he would be a granddad.

Re: What do your grandchildren call you?
My son (who is here on a visit at the moment) has just reminded me that he calls my Grandma Leah by the name Bubbie. I had completely forgotten as I have not seem them together for such a long time. I'm not sure if this is Polish or Yiddish. She calls him Bubula which I know means "dear one" in one of those two languages.
He also pointed out that my American daughter calls her Babcia which is said something like BAHBCHA. Again this is either Polish or Yiddish for Grandma and just a variant on Bubbie I suppose. How this came about I have no idea, presumably Leah herself instigated it once she decided she was old enough to acknowledge being a grandmother. She's just been Leah to me since I was a teenager and I only ever call her Grandma Leah so that people have a clue who I'm talking about! Prior to that I called her Matka and as this means Mother I suspect I was just copying my own mother.
