Wasps eating apples!

Post: # 163744Post mrsmiggins »

Over the last couple of days my apples have ripened really quickly, and attracted loads of wasps. I can't even get near the tree to pick them. Any tips on how to rescue my poor apples?

But seriously, I think you may have to distract them - have you thought of a saucer of jam at the other end of the garden?

Last year we had a terrible problem with wasps, we tried a few home made traps and this is the only one that really worked.... as follows...

You need a jam jar with a metal lid.

Take the lid off and punch an X into the top (I used an old chisel) then push the corners of the X downwards so that the hole created is big enough to fit a pencil through and no more (in fact maybe a bit less)

half fill the jar with water and drop a very ripe banana peel in there (make sure the banana peel is submerged)

screw the lid back on and leave it where wasps are a pest.... empty and refill every few days.
