Hello from France

Post: # 154709Post wolfsong »

I've been living in France for 6 years, studying for the Bac (A-levels), and this year will finish and return to blighty to attend uni to study architecture.
At home we are looking at full on sustainable living, already producing all our veg (main problem is milk products really) and heating the house using a large log burner which we fuel form our own land.
My life dream is to be able to help others set up eco-communities away from government meddling, and allow people to enjoy their lives by designing systems and houses that run on what they produce. Also have this idea of being able to design and build a house using a group of friends, who sign the contract, design the house, move onto the land, build the building using natural methods (cob etc.), sign it off and move onto the next one. I am angry with the amount of time it takes to do anything without doing it illegally, such as planning, and other tedious systems.

Hello Wolfsong

Unfortuntely planning and building regs, originally to protect us from inappropriate and unsafe developments, have become slow and subjective. Approval often appears to be who you konw rather than what you know eg a local who has built a house and has permission for holiday caravans on a woodland site where even a log cabin had previously been refused. Can't be cos he's now on the council can it?
