Personally I find things grow much quicker if you wait until the weather is warmer then sow them outside, either in pots or direct into the ground. Saves an awful lot of faffing around.
For example I sowed basil in my propagator at the end of March last year, and then some more directly in the ground in about May or June. They both were pretty much the same size by July!

Depends on your weather... If I don't get things started inside, I can forget about harvesting anything - apart from radishes maybe! Ok, the peas went in direct, too. But whereas you could probably get several crops of peas, because you can get the first lot in the ground a month before us, they then grow much faster, and you can get the last lot in a few weeks after us, I'm lucky to get one good crop, or two in an exceptional year!
