Another Newbie

Post: # 17871Post pixieface »

 I have lurked on the site for a while, but its time I came out of the woodwork

My husband and I are retired living on the outskirts of Leicester, we have an allotment where we grow all our veg and fruit, we have a garden but the back is gravelled so use it to grow salad, herbs and some flowers in containers, the front garden is for show.........

We have never had the cash to be able to be completely self sufficient, but the restraints of living on a very limited income has meant that we have developed a way of living we are happy with. We recycle as much as we can and we also subscribe to the Leicestershire freecycle, we have just picked up a lean to plant house for the allotment, we are going to fix it to the back of the shed.

We took over the allotment at the end of last season, we had it ploughed and harrowed and left it over the winter, we have just dug it over and put the spuds in for the summer. We have always grown our own veg, had an allotment before but it was too big, this one is half of a full size one, enough for us. We moved all the fruit bushes we had in pots in the back, gooseberries, Raspberries, apples, plum blackcurrants and stawberries, and they all seem to be doing well. The allotment is surrounded by a conifer hedge and is slightly sloping, so its very sheltered and during the summer is a real sun trap..... we are looking forward to spending days up there when the weather is better.

I would love to have been able to do what Dick on its not easy to be green has done, afraid we are too old now, so we do the best we can with what we have.

  I have just realised that I actually put a bit on here when we first took over the allotment at the end of last year.........to bring you up to date, we found at the turn of the year that we could no longer afford to keep our touring caravan, so we have sold it, so no more trips to France for us BOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO unless we go on day trips........ We are going to Cornwall in a couple of weeks for a weeks holiday in a static van, that looks like being 'our barra' from now on........the woodchips have been put down as path and we have also used some at home as mulch for the front garden. The derilict plot next to us has been taken and the council have moved all the rubbish that was on it, the shed is up and has water barrels attached and we have two compost heaps. My husband cuts a friends grass during the summer so will be taking the grass clipping up there as well as the veg waste from the house. He has made what he calls a leisure area at the side of the shed where we can have a table and chairs.........the bath is now full of water, as are the barrels........wonder if the council will switch the water tap on this year of if we will be the subject of a hosepipe ban?????

As mentioned else where I had a very nasty virus infection before Christmas, I am just beginning to get over it, but it has caused us quite a bit if angst...........I still get very tired, so have to limit what I do......looking forward to spending some quaility time at the allotment and in our garden this year.

Welcome back, Pixie

Good to hear your allotment is going well. But don't overdo it; so many people seem to be suffering from the aftermath of viral infections...

Hi Pixie - just go up there and use your 'leisure area' whilst your husband does the hard work! Hope you will recover soon but just take it easy in the meantime.

Hello Pixieface,

I have just joined up with selfsufficientish and have been reading through some of the posts. I have noticed that you are in the Leicester area and are an experienced grower!

:dave:

I am in Leicester too and haven't a clue where to start!

Could I trade some good old fashioned hard work for you in exchange for knowledge? If you are not too far away from me, I can come and do some weeding, digging etc (you will have to point out which are weeds at this stage though!) if you are willing to give me some advice about planting, germinating seeds and suppliers?

Please feel free to PM me!
Regards
Tina
