Freezing mash

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Freezing mash

Post: # 179057Post lovelygreenleaves »

I don't think I've ever frozen mashed potato before, apart from as part of a pie. There seems to be a debate on the web about whether it's any good. Does it freeze ok?

Yes - but I've always been told not to add any butter or milk before freezing. Your post's made me realise that I've never questioned this. I wonder if it's true?

We've frozen it with butter and milk in it before and it's been fine, better than wasting it and we can always use it with another meal later in the month afterall you can buy the stuff in the supermarkets already processed and frozen so why not do it at home. At least you know there's nothing odd gone into it that way :)

Thanks everyone, I think I'll try it without the milk and butter, then add that later. I asked because I'm doing a big batch and didn't want to waste it. I'm sure it's probably fine, I bet there's not much in the taste. I hope... :santa:

I processed a load of my small/holy/going soft spuds into roasties and mash for freezing. I didn't add anything to the mash, just let it cool then pushed it into ice-cube trays to freeze in batches, then popped the frozen cubes into a big bag. Easy to get as much as you need whenever you want and the small lumps defrost quickly. I used some tonight to thicken up some homemade soup.

Thanks to the last thread I have frozen some - it's a mash mix with parsnip - but yet to defrost it and use it! I have a bit left over from last night but it's not worth freezing so I'll give it to the chooks. It does have butter and milk added because I don't know when making it how much we are going to eat, obviously!

My thinking was to collect enough mash to either use for a much quicker to make shepherd's pie, or to add smaller amounts to a soup mix.

My spuds are going off rapidly so the cooking up a batch for the freezer is a good idea although I don't have a lot of room.

I froze loads a few months ago now, after being given a massive bag of peeled spuds. I did not add milk, but did add butter and its turned out fine.
