birds in winter

Post: # 180957Post gdb »

now that the snow is here and the temperatures are very low, it's time to put out something (or, hopefully, something extra) for all the birds who help make our gardens/towns/allotments such nice places to be.

i've found this link which gives some ideas

http://www.thekidsgarden.co.uk/helping- ... inter.html

but it could be interesting to see what other tips - if any - ishers have.....

i never seem to get much further than fat-balls and seeds!

I feed the birds but can't put anything on the ground cos the blooming ducks come along and scoff it all, they already scuffle up all the gravel looking for any seeds which drop from the feeders. We did originally hang the feeders from trees but the ducks completely snuffled up and ruined the grass underneath hence our feeding stations now situated on gravel.

We stuck poles (metal or old broom handles) into cheap plastic outdoor umbrella bases (stops them blowing over in the wind), attached a strong but bendable metal cross pole through the (convenient!) hole in said metal or broom handle with the ends of it shaped into hooky bits, and hang feeders and fat balls and peanut feeders and hanging tables etc off that.

Does any of that make any sense? Cos our home made bird table just kept blowing over and breaking in the wind hence my OH coming up with this idea.

Only magpies and crows and chaffies eat the duck and chook food. The other birds are more discerning!
