Moving but want to take some fruity plants with me...
Moving but want to take some fruity plants with me...
Talking on the forum about avoiding sorting my fruit cage has reminded me..
As I am now moving to another county I will be letting the allotment go in a few months.. We have a good fruit patch with strawberrys, red grape, white grape, black currents, raspberrys and white current (and weeds but thats another story..).
Now I had thought maybe I would just dig the whole lot up and take it with me but I dont know when I will be able to replant them so taking cuttings (which may survive better in pots than whole established plants) seemed like a good idea.. The strawberrys will be easy but I have tried researching the rest and the results have been varied and in some cases, down right contradictory...
Anyone had any experience with taking cuttings from fruit bushes/plants? I really would like to leave them tbh as it would be nice for the next person to have..
Cheers

Now's a good time for digging up any sort of shrubs.
We've had them with the rootball wrapped in hessian until January when they eventually got replanted. They were all fine and fruited well that year.

I don't know about striking cuttings from the currants (never done it before so haven't researched at what time of year you do it!) but I can't see how you can go wrong with the raspberry, just chop a bit of stalk + root with a spade and shove it in a pot. I bet you can't kill it.

Hmm will watch out for nasties then! Shame about your raspberrys SG, I lost most of my fruit crop to a wasps nest this year so I can see why it seems like the little buggers have it in for you sometimes!!
I may well end up digging it all up, or at least enough to have a decent crop next year. I have read one thing that seems to stay consistant in that its now a good time to dig up/transplant/take cuttings..
Thinking about it this may well all be pre-emptive until I find a new house to live in. As I will be renting for a while I may have nothing more that a window box and not sure the bushes will like that!!

Are there any border restrictions in europe when transporting plants/roots ?
ie. laws in the country you are traveling to, bans the import of certain plants due to pests or diseases.

Well Gem is just moving within England so there are no problems there. Mostly within Europe I don't think there is much of a problem with taking of plants to other countries - I think there's one or two things to watch out for - as I recall it might be chrysanthemums and potatoes.... ummm I'd have to check and I can't be bothered
and that's just into the UK so I don't know about every individual country.
I do recall crossing state lines in the US and having customs (or whatever they were) people materialise in the middle of nowhere checking our hire car for fruit and veg and flowers etc!!!
It seemed completely wierd to not be able to take say a banana across a state line within the same country! I didn't tell them about my wedding bouquet that I was keeping (I'd just got married in Vegas!).
