Sowing Now?

Post: # 183946Post bonniethomas06 »

I always seem to miss something. And an ahem...'limited' budget means that instead of buying in one lump, I will be buying seeds monthly when they need to be sown.

Are you sowing anything yet? I will be sowing my aubergenes and sweet peppers very shortly. I know it is very early, but every single year I find they don't have time to come to anything as I have left it too late.

Anything else you plan to sow in January?

Tomatoes, peppers and aubergines and okra, in cells, in propagator on south facing windowsill.

There are broad beans, spuds in bags and salad leaves in the polytunnel, already doing their stuff  The peas and beans haven't done anything so I'll re-do those next month.

I have chickpeas, alfalfa, and mustard sprouting on the windowsill - our main source of salads in winter.

And I'm going to get some herbs going in the next day or two - I bought supermarket basil etc over Christmas, but now it's time to get back on track.

I think that's more or less it - we sorted out our seeds yesterday, by beds, so I need to go and look at them again for sowing dates. We need to start a lot sooner up here and sow under glass because of the short growing season.

Unfortunately I don't have a bright window sill, so to avoid everything becoming very leggy I have to wait until next month at least before I start sowing.

I don't do anything in advance indoors these days as I've found they do much better starting in early May outside in a cold frame. Most stuff I've sown inside (other than sweetcorn) just goes leggy and weak and either dies, or by the time it starts to grow properly outside, the much later sown seedlings have well overtaken them and are robust and healthy. So it isn't worth it.

Along these lines, can anyone recommend a seed catalogue for the UK for me to order up for this season?

I put in 3 rows of peas today, and a row of Garlic.

I washed out all my seed trays yesterday so I can get going with peppers and some of the early tomatoes. Going to do some annuals from seed this year too, the prices of ready grown ones ar silly. Sweet peas, petunias and some red lobelia are going in tomorrow in propogators on the window sills.

I'd second that.

They are who I get my seeds from - and you need good stock to grow well over here!
