And...we're off!

Post: # 189518Post bonniethomas06 »

Hooray, took a long weekend off to work on the new patch and am pleased to say:

1st earlies are in;
garlic (a bit late) is in;
shallots are in;
red and white onions are in, with nifty bird scarers.

Inside, toms, aubergene, peppers, chillis, b.beans, peas, spinach, leuttice and onion (bunched from seeds) are all growing away nicely. Even stuck in some sweet peas.

Just wanted to declare...it feels like it has been so long, but finally feel like things are getting started ! :flower:

I've done loads as well. Probably too many. I have a plan where they are all going to go but ...

in ground:

pot charlotte
2 x desiree
pentland javelin
onion red/white
garlic
shallot
another onion cos i planted above too close
carrot 2 rows and two planters
sweet peas (autumn sown plants from mum)
peas

in conservatory

mushrooms
toms ailsa craig and plum
oregano
rocket
cabbage
courgette
aubergine
beetroot
pea shoots
leeks
parsnip
cos lettuce
sweetcorn

still to sow

runner beans
cherry toms
spring onions
iceberg lettuce
cornflowers
nastursiums
swede
more of the first batch (did small quantities)

still to buy

basil
mint
strawberries
poached egg plant

I forgot fruit!
planted in pots 3 x patio apple trees. Braeburn, gala, golden delicious
5 x raspberry canes
4 x blackcurrant (2 might be dead)
new cherry tree just planted.
plum tree (mature)

useful writing the above list. I only just yesterday bought some labels which I'd better apply quickly. Most of the seeds are individual in egg boxes or cardboard pots from poundland. Try to avoid the pricking out process and have stronger plants.

Next plan is to figure out how much I've spent on all of the above. Id like to try and cost up what I save on produce all year and use figures in arguments with other other half who hasn@t embraced idea of self sufficiency quite like me>

Cheers

Ive just spent all day in the garden

I'm probably being a bit optamistic but stuff it the sun was shining.

I put in the last of the peas, lettuce, 3 different types of Calendula, some carrots which I dont expect to do much as it's last years seed but worth a shot anyway.

I planted 3 blackcurrant bushes and have spent the rest of the day levelling off an area to put down a bench we were bought for Christmas.

Its been so lovely

Frosts have gone (for now anyway) so today I planted:

Shallots
Onion sets
Parsnips
Broad beans

In the PT I have started various brassicas, lettuces, celeriac, various japanses veggies and transplanted some lettuce seedlings I bought yesterday.

All very satisfying but loads to go still!!

wow - all really impressive. I'm a slobby, lazy, desk bound woose in comparison!

I have spent most of this weekend in the garden (in for a quick cuppa since the rain has just come on) but I've still been playing catch up and have left all my seeds abandoned in a heap to go play with my flower beds - which as OH keeps pointing out - we can't eat. But i need to go and rescue them from the creeping buttercup and save them from the rabbits which have been eating everything - heather, hebe, willow, roses, etc etc (bandits! :angryfire: )

Still in the ground I have from last years planting sprees:-
spring cabbages
PSB - still producing
garlic and
overwintering onions
and my spuds are chitting in the garage

Yay...peas raised indoors hardened off and planted outside. They look so pretty with the pea sticks.

Indoor broad beans planted out too.

Oh and second early pots.

Carrots and spring onion sown outside, and broccoli in trays in the greenhouse.

And spent a lovely evening pricking out tomatoes, I love the sight of a three inch high tomato plant in a nice brown pot.

Simple things and all that! The patch really looks like it has things going on now.

So far this season I've got:

Asian greens (tatsoi, pak choi, red mustard)
Kale (which I know from last year will happily sit through frosts until spring)
Spring onions
garlic
radish
daikon (I won't even know how to cook it!)
parsnips
swedes
beetroot
broadbeans
peas (which refuse to bloody sprout. apparently I'm watering them too much)

I've got the other season to all of you Brits, though :)
