I tried winter lettuce but it was pretty limp and boring as lettuce goes and then it just went to seed before it got very big! This was last autumn which was mild so I don't know??? I'm a bit sceptical about winter lettuce (unless perhaps it's grown under cover) - would a lettuce leaf really stand up to frost? Think I'll stick to buying it in winter!

Last winter I overwintered some normal lettuce, just because it hadn't grown big enough to pick before it became cold... It was perfectly ok, so I thought that "proper" winter lettuce should be even better! I'll give it a try, anyway. Maybe under fleece.
