My sone just demanded to know why we have only Tzatziki and no beetroot dip in the fridge (!) and I realised that down here it is beetroot planting time. Is there a good beginners beetroot, prefrably idiot proof and early cropping....?
Something a three and a half yearold would like!
(he is "helping" me (distracting me terribly)right now by telling me things about his "snap" cards and I accidently typed "beertoot"...)

Re: Beginner beetroot..?
Most beetroot is beginner friendly - but you can get packs of seeds that have a variety of colours in, white, orange and red beets which may be more interesting for a younger mind.
If you space them out when you plant them you get bigger beets which can go woody.
I clump sow mine and then pick them in little bunches when the beets are smaller (about ping pong/golf ball size), leaving just one behind to get tennis ball size for picking later in the year and making pickles and chutneys with. They are quite fast growing anyway.

2010 is my year of projects - 365 days and 365 projects.

Re: Beginner beetroot..?
Thanks for that! I will plant some in clumps too, the colours are a good idea although Sir Talks Alot is very pedantic and may reject white beetroot as being improper!
We will pick up some seeds tomorrow..
