http://www.durgan.org/URL/?FYUWO 4 May 2010 Transplanting Tomato Plants
These plants were purchased from a local supplier, since I was away and could not grow my own. The plants were root bound, so I decided to transplant into larger containers, since the weather will not be suitable for outdoor planting until the end of May. There are about ten different varieties, two of each, for a total of twenty plants.
The bottom leaves were trimmed, the root ball was gently torn apart to encourage sprouting outwards, rather than encircling the root ball. Depth of planting to encourage new roots was deep, up to the first leaf stem. The plants will be kept outdoors to condition for outdoor planting at the end of May-weather permitting. The coffee filter contains the root ball, and prevents soil from leaking out, when they have to be moved indoors due to cold weather conditions. The soil is my own mixture, made during the Summer of 2009.
Tomato Plants purchased from a local supplier: Early Girl 2, Supersonic 3, Beefmaster 2,
Ponderosa Pink 2, Burpee Big Boy 3, Lemon Boy 2, Cherokee Purple 2, Ultra Boy 1, Supersonic 2,
Supersteak 1.
