Hello, I like this website, it's a nice mixture of being informative, warm and friendly and not too serious so one can ask daft questions. I am new to vegetable gardening, so far I am enjoying it immensely and learning a lot. I seem to have planted a lot of beans hence my choice of username.
I have a question about some seedlings, is this the right forum section to ask questions in?

I ask stupid questions all the time - so if you are in the wrong place so am I!
I want to ask about planting fruit trees in a vegpatch - I'm stuck for room, and have just got a black currant / redcurrant and raspberry plant
Would they work at the side of my veg plot (small) or not?
If not - will they be happy shoved in a corner near a privet (argh hate privet) or would that sap them?
What food will they like etc? same as vegs? - trying to be organic (bit wary of Andy's spell checker there!)
so many questions sorry

By the way Andy I have not forgotten the excellent pasta hanger upper! Daren't ask if you have any advice on strawberry pots!

Hi green bean, best place to ask question is on the hint, tips and problems bit as more people tend to have a look there to answer them. But they seem to get answered anywhere on the forum in truth. welcome to the site mate, good to see that it is viewed in exactly the way we intended it to be.

Glad you liked the pasta thing sue I have never tried with fruit as I have not been in one place for long enough. Have a go at asking in the fruit section as you might get more of a repose there. In fact I know that there are definitely some fruit growers amongst us.

I haven't done much with currents etc. but my experience with fruit trees is that anything inside the leaf drip line will not grow happy veggies, and than line gets bigger every year!

The other trap for young players is allowing for the size that the tree is now rather than the size that the tree will grow to (I have done this! ). All sorts of shading/nutrient sucking problems can occur. best to keep the two separated if you can.

Generally it is important to feed the trees in the spring to give them a go on, sometimes a smaller amount in the autumn as well. Organic stuff and mulch is good.
