Hello From Oldham, Lancashire

Post: # 197700Post spymurph »

Hello Everyone. I'm new to the forum so would like to tell you a little bit about myself and my life. I am a nurse, currently working full time but planning for a time when I can say goodbye to all that and live a simpler life. I am fortunate enough to have a large garden plot which my family and I are gradually turning over to more and more veg and fruit production. This year we will have a surplus so I am getting intested in ways of preserving food and in selling or bartering what we can't eat or keep. I haven't yet taken the plunge into keeping livestock of any sort. We are very suburban here and I am keen to learn how we might make that work in this setting. I have taken up knitting and sewing and am trying to "produce not consume" as much as possible. I will be offloading a load of "stuff" I don't use via ebay and the good old car boot sale.
I have a few heroes... Alys Fowler (Edible Garden)...Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall... Bob Flowerdew.... The Time Team (no relevance... I just love them)... Ray Mears (for his foraging skills)..
I look forward to learning from all the people on here... XX

Hi there, and welcome to Ish. I lived in Ashton for 20 years before moving up here - worked at 111 Union St (it's now moved I believe) for a few years before moving up here.

Thank you for the welcome...

I know Ashton quite well, I buy all my spices from ASM, an excellent Asian store. There's a very good independent nursery called Mockridges which sells excellent quality plants and trees at sensible prices. I bought a greengage tree recently and am hoping for years of yummy harvests from that. The very best thing about Ashton is a brilliant monthly farmers' market, last sunday of the month. A large, well organised market, reasonably priced which I try to get to as often as possible. It's worth travelling to for anyone in the northwest because there's so much there.

Welcome too from me.

Although I live in Standish near Wigan now, I used to work for Tameside and live near Ashton and Oldham.

I miss the hills but not the grey skies and the cold winds in Winter.......................... its flatter and gentler here.

It was interesting to hear about the farmers market in Ashton the last day of every month as I work from home selling eco friendly products and It might be worth enquiring if they`d let me do a stall there.

Very cold up here in Lancashire today
