PLanting Garlic

Post: # 200514Post GrowerNewbie »

I know usually the time to plant garlic is in late autumn/early winter to be harvested mid summer - but!

I'd forgotten about some garlic in the fridge and they've started sprouting! Is it worh sticking them in the ground and see what happens? Or am I just wasting my time??

Thanks for any advice!

I disagree Susie
While you almost certainly wouldn't get any bulbs, plus you would run the very real risk of them all bolting, you would get some very tasty foliage and stems that taste totally different to shop bought mature garlic.
Green or wet garlic has a wonderful taste and if you have fridge resident garlic going to waste and some spare ground, it's worth a try. Nothing lost if it doesn't work out.

Stick it in a plantpot over the ground then if it does take you can transplant it later. Usually garlic needs a cold spell to spark it into life which is probably why you have it sprouting now but I'd stick it in an see what happens

Think I'll take Big Al's suggestion and plant in pots and see what happens.

Nothing ventured and all that..... :salute:
