PSB at last

Post: # 201813Post grahamhobbs »

The PSB planted in my polytunnel last October has finally produced spears, or rather one of them has, hurrah!!
I found out that they were variety Claret, that should produce spears in April, so why did it take until the end of June in a polytunnel. It is not as if we had a warm winter (it froze in our polytunnel) that might of confused it. And what about the ones that still haven't produced despite being massive.
The calabrese in the polytunnel over winter did wonderfully, but the PSB this year will remain outside.

I think Graham should be really kind and share his one stalk of PSB with all the Ishers who lost their plants last winter - I'm one of them!

Really surprised it's taken this long to produce stalks though given it must be pretty hot in that tunnel!

How very strange Graham, I'm up to my ears in PSB at the moment, although it's just starting to go over now with smaller and thinner spears.
I sowed mine on the 3rd February, planted them out in the tunnel on the 8th April and started cutting heads at the beginning of June. I'm growing Summer Purple and I planted some outside as well and they made much smaller plants but produced heads at virtually the same time as the indoor ones, so it's not plant size that determines when the will head up ... the indoor ones are about 3' tall and look and taste just like the regular overwintered ones.
Not sure if I will grow them next year though, as there is a glut of everything else during June, but nice all the same.
Tony

Yes PSB in June is a waste of space, in April it would have been most welcome. Unfortunately I couldn't bring myself to dig them out until I'd seen them produce, they are now 5' tall, stalks as thick as tree trunks, and taking up an enormous amount of space in the polytunnel. As it happens a mouse ate most of my sweetcorn seeds/seedlings so not growing so much this year otherwise they would have had to have come out earlier (have to grow sweetcorn in polytunnel otherwise eaten by squirrels).
