planting potatoes close to fruit trees

Post: # 1629Post beanie »

Hello

I have an allotment with some bizzarely placed fruit trees (raspberries and gooseberries) I am loath to dig them up but there is space nearby where I am thinking of plantig my potatoes, if only to clear what seems to be previously undug land.

If there's about a metre between the bushes and the potatoes will this be ok?

Hmm not sure about this, I guess you have to carefull about disturbing the roots. I am unsure how far apple tree roots go. Still learning about fruit I am afraid

The issue also is shading. If the fruit trees will shade your potatoes, then they will still grow, but your crop will be reduced, ptopotional to the level of shading!

you said they were raspberry and gooseberry which I usually think of as bushes rather than trees...my raspberries are less than a metre from my spuds...and both seem to be ok so far
