Brussel Sprouts - will they or won't they?
Brussel Sprouts - will they or won't they?
I planted a few brussel sprout seeds a few weeks ago and the packet clearly stated that they were to be planted until May, but I love them and got them when it was too late so planted them anyway. I've got some seedlings - is it likely that the plants will do okay do you think?

Unfortunately probably not. Brussel sprouts need a long growing season and should be a sizeable plant by now, but all is not lost as you will get some tasty sprout tops later in the year.
But it might make you remember to sow them a lot earlier next year.

You get a sort of mini-cabbage/huge sprout on the top of the plant then the sprouts proper grow down the stem. The top is the only bit I can tolerate - doesn't seem to have the bitterness of the sprouts

You should try different varieties Maggie, the red ones in particular have no bitterness at all and I have to say that I can't remember the last time I noticed a green one being bitter either, although shop bought ones may be different.Green Aura wrote:The top is the only bit I can tolerate - doesn't seem to have the bitterness of the sprouts
But I get the impression you just don't like sprouts, full stop.

Oh the things we do for our other halves.
Thankfully mine doesn't like sprouts either so I don't have to try growing them. Actually even if he did like them I have my flea beetles as a good excuse not to!!!
