Don't know Susie. We've always left them on the plant to ripen.

But the only chillies we had real success with were some called Serrano (?) I think. Tiny bird's eye type. They were so prolific and carried on and on.

We tried growing Habaneros and Friar's Hat - they were very disappointing. Not very hot at all. And we've not had much success at all up here with them - I presume the light isn't sufficient or something.

I just planted mine outside yesterday having grown seedlings inside. Any tips? I cant actually even remember what type they were. Will it be too cold, dim and wet for them?

I have had this dilemma with peppers which just stop producing flowers when the green peppers are waiting to ripen, but as chillies usually have quite a lot more fruit on than a pepper plant I never worried about it. Could you pick green ones from some of the plants and leave them on others (I don't know how many plants you have)? Anyway you could always use some of those green ones now in your cooking.

Not sure where you are, but in England my experience is that peppers and chillies only just about ripen up to red before the end of the season. So if you definitely want red chillies I would probably leave them alone, but as already suggested you could use some green ones now and leave some to ripen.
