Potatoes to plant Aug/Sept
Hi to all
Would welcome any advice on variety of spuds we can plant now for winter use. If possible, potatoes for boiling as we tend to use them in stews, curries etc.
Thanks to all

Re: Potatoes to plant Aug/Sept
I shall plant some Charlotte (salad) later this month for eating around Christmas time, but they will be in containers in my frost free greenhouse.
If you are thinking of planting potatoes in the garden now then I would say your wasting your time as the first frost will kill them.
You don't say where you live, but I'm assuming somewhere in the British Isles, so the only time really to plant them is March to May.
So I'm afraid you may have left it a tad late.

Charlotte are great for stews and curries, I could also plant some in containers in the greenhouse....can you suggest some online suppliers please?

They were Nicola and Charlotte varieties, and WW means Staverton/Gloucestershire airport, not the one near Kemble, by the wayWhiteWolf wrote:MP

Re: Potatoes to plant Aug/Sept
Do they really sell seed potatoes in garden centres in September ?
Not counting our antipodean friends garden centres that is.

Re: Potatoes to plant Aug/Sept
I only grew Charlottes this year as they don't seem to get attacked by slugs as much as all the other varieties I have tried, and they are excellant, not just as new potatoes, but they roast and chip aswell
I only intend to grow them next year, and I think I might put some in the greenhouse for Christmas

Oh dear - I've planted loads of potatoes in a cast iron bath dumped in the garden by the landlord - sounds from reading this I might not have much luck. I'll have to hope we don't get frost until at least November

I changed my signature because it was rubbish; I like what you said

You can always stick a bit of fleece over if there's a frost warning.

Does it have to be a specific type of fleece Green Aura?
