Runner Beans.

Post: # 207864Post patR »

This year Im trying something different for me , as we've had tons of the slicing kind of beans, french, dwarf green and yellow waxy pods, and now I had a good crop of runners, I decided to copy my neighbour and leave the runner beans to grow huge, fill out the pods and then pick them.
Yesterday we did it, podded them and have frozen them as the actual beans. Like a fresh version of dried beans for soups and stews...
We were given some like this last year and they were delicious. Hopefully mine will be as good, a quicker version of dried beans too... any one else tried this with success?

No I haven't yet Pat, but it is something I have thought of as I repeatedly slice and freeze the darn runner beans night after night. Next year I am determined to grow beans for beans sake - perhaps berlotti or something? It is not as thoguh I don't have the space, as once the broad beans and peas are over in June I could bung some drying beans in instead.

Good idea.

Tony (odsox) does it and makes baked beans. I've only saved enough to plant the next year, thus far, but must give it a go - assuming we work out how to grow beans up here
