Silkie Bantams

Post: # 20940Post glenniedragon »

I've just bought a trio of POL Golden Silkie Bantams from our local poultry auction (I really shouldn't be allowed to go on my own, I always comeback with something) I've put them in the spare Ark I had, and already the girls are reluctant to leave the ark wanting to sit in the nest all the time, I know Silkies are really broody-but surely not this much! they really take a push to get them outside to have a bite to eat and a drink...could it be 'new home' anxiety or are they really that daft? -they are Rocky the cockeral, Ginger and Babs (not named by me) my son is already a fan of the 'fluffy chickens' even though Rocky was practising his crowing at 6am. Anything I should be doing different for these that I do for my regular girls?

kind thoughts and increasing chicken numbers

after seeing the silkies at an animal nursury, mr 4 had his heart set on have a fluffy chook at home. got hold of one and fluffy needed a friend. we now have fluffy and fluffies friend.

don't know if you get fowl pox on the other side of the world but catch them up and have a close look around their faces to make sure there is no sign of scabs and the eyes are open.

These guys appear to be lovely and healthy, even Rocky let me tickle his wattles- he crowed a bit afterwards to show me just how hard he really was. They are really docile, I look forward to learning how to deal with them-so far so good, if they really are that broody I might stick some pot eggs in a nest and see if either girl decides to set them. Poultry keeping is very addictive, you really be warned before you start!

kind thoughts
