What did I do wrong this time?
I've been nurturing my tomatos from tiny little seeds, religiously feeding and watering, keeping them warm but well ventilated (in the greenhouse), and they were coming on great until yesterday when, to my surprise, they were covered in grey fur. I rescued as much fruit as I could, so now I have a utility room full of green misshapen tomatos in the hope that they turn red, but I'm completely at a loss to why they went furry. I'm having no luck this year at all!!!

Re: What did I do wrong this time?
Sounds like a fungal infection, mildew or similar. It's usually a problem if the growing are has been moist and warm with not much circulation of air.
If it's been a bit colder recently so you don't leave the door open (windows aren't enough to allow a good air flow) then suddenly a bright warm day that would be enough.
Get rid of the plants and give the greenhouse a good wash down and give it a good airing before next year.
And keep an eye on the ones you've salvaged - any signs of a fur coat - out! The rest should still ripen though if you keep them somewhere with plenty of light and a bit warm.

My heart goes out to you.
I too have never been good with tomatoes.
This year I over fed them and they died after producing about 3 tomatoes, stupid thing is I don't even like them fresh, oven roasted with Garlic and Rosemarry and potted in Olive oil, yum.
It's not you, its just tomatoes are Evil, and only grow properly for nasty people*
*that is a joke, designed to make PD feel better, not a reflection of anyone who may happen to be able to grow the damm things

You're not the only one Puddleduck, I noticed the other day that mine are also starting to get grey and furry -but to be honest, I am getting a bit sick of the damn things now, the stress of having to make things with it before they go off is getting a bit much!
Although we did make ketchup and it was lovely. Don't despair - clear the lot out and make room for winter salad veg and herbs instead.

Re: What did I do wrong this time?
Thanks guys, it's been tough but they're all out now and I'll be bleaching the living daylights out of the greenhouse at the weekend. Am just frustrated because nothing is growing well at the minute and it's too wet to be productive. The toms were the only thing doing well......
Re: What did I do wrong this time?
Mine did well too.
All seeds germinated and I dont like throwing away plants. So I had tomatoes everywhere.
In the greenhouse...polytunnel....Pots....Buckets...Hanging and wall baskets. Growing up 10 canes in an 8" strip of soil behind the polytunnel.
Boxes of tomatoes in the kitchen turning red....Boxes in the spare bedroom....Boxes in the shed.
Tomatoes.....Tomatoes....Bloody Tomatoes everywhere.
We have been eating tomatoes in every way possible..........I hate tomatoes, they just take over your life. I think Im going Tomato crazy.
Saying That............
At least all the neighbours were happy...... Free tomatoes for all of them.
I guarantee If I only plant a few seeds next year none will germinate.
Happy gardening to all..........Tomato Brain...Eeeer I mean ....Evil...Evil... Denzle.

Brilliant Denzle
I feel a little bit like that but on a minor scale. Thankfully it's turned warmish and sunny again so they are ripening both in and out
and I don't know what to do with them any more - need another freezer, I just haven't got time to do anything to them other than bag and chuck in freezer.

P.S. A prize of a tomato goes to anyone who can spot the Self Sufficientish Bible on my bookshelves!

I forgot to mention in my crazed moment, that my chest freezer and my kitchen freezer have loads of pulped toms in too.

If you dont mind, I wont go in for your find the book competition. I will let someone else take first prize as I am just about recovering now from Tomato fever. lol

I never thought I would say this.......But I hope next year is a flop.

Re: What did I do wrong this time?
Well they're 26c here so double neh neh
, however they don't taste ANYTHING like home grown tomatoes.
And I'm really hacked off when I open a tin of plum peeled tomatoes to discover that not only are they not completely peeled, but they have canned tomatoes with blossom end rot.
So I don't buy them Lidl anymore and pay 1 cent more in the supermarket.

Re: What did I do wrong this time?
Sorry Denzle, only just noticed your post (I thought it was mine cos of the photo!) - I have cherry tom 'juice' both bottled in jam jars and in the freezer, roasted tomato puree/sauce in the fridge, red tomato chutney, green tomato chutney, spicy tom soup and bags of the things in the freezer. Need to cook up more cherry toms this afternoon but I think I will have to bottle them in Le Parfait jars as I've only got enough jam jars left for one lot of jam and one lot of (apple!!) chutney. It's been a good year for many things.
