Growing Loganberry bushes in containers?

Post: # 212079Post Sinmara »

When I went to the garden centre on Sunday I came back with a loganberry bush (I couldn't resist....), not thinking that it may not work in a container.

I've read conflicting advice if they can be grown in containers - one source said yes, another source said no.

Did anybody have success?

I've only grown loganberries on horizontal wires (like an espalier). Now, if you could do this along a sunnyish wall, say 3 strands@ 18'',3',and4' 6'' on wires secured to the wall, and you had a decent size container say 1/2 an oak barrel size,I think that could work well.Remember they arte gross feeders so liquid manure in the spring plus top up the container with WR manure or similar (just seen your location, chickencrap pellets!).If this sounds too hard.dont give up,Loganberries are really worth growing.Best Wishes OJ>

Thank you - I have plenty of walls where they can grow - there's already a large blackberry bush which is rooted in the ground, but no space for my loganberries there! (Plus it's a rented place)

If the wall is made of brick you can buy (cheaply) little eyelets that attach to the wall with masonry nails, and they wont make much of a mark that the landlord acan see or moan about.Your wires can then go through these. If you keep the thing pruned properly (RHS guide from library) it's not beyond the bounds of credibility to move it to a new place, should you relocate.( I'm currently moving similar sorts of stuff acouple of thousand mies across Europe, they're mine and there's no way I'm leaving them behind!).

Thanks - the previous owner of the place had loads of rose bushes that were secured to the wall, so there are already planks on the wall where they could go.

I'll see what I can do at the weekend (shame it's so dark in the evening these days, would love to do something when I come home from work - and haven't gotten round to buy solar lights yet!

I've eyed up some solar lights at Argos already, but all my garden centre shenanigans this month left me a bit broke! (they had £1 strawberry plants on offer. Had to buy them. And the pots. And the heathers. And the lavenders...)
