They are NOT oyster mushrooms, I have them growing wild on my land and they come up much earlier, in late summer - also they come up all grouped together. They don't look anything like that. Please google.

For god's sake do NOT eat anything that you do not know 100% what it is - and that's not just fungus but anything growing in the wild. :banghead:

I suspect they are honey fungus though I am not sure from those pictures. Honey fungus is good to eat providing it is cooked though there have been some reports of gastric upsets. It is very reckless to eat things you haven't properly idenitified. Please don't eat unless you are sure.

1) If you think these look like either oyster mushroom or chanterelles, then... I dunno, you must need your eyes examined or something. Certainly, you should not be eating self-picked mushrooms at all if that is your idea of a close match.

2) I agree with Fungi2BWith, they are probably honey fungus. Hard to say though, they're less distinctive when they've gone over a bit, like these have. Young ones have a more distinctive shape.

3) Would you really want to eat those anyway? They look a bit manky and a bit waterlogged. Nasty. If those were on sale at a shop, would you buy them? I wouldn't. It is still possible to get food poisoning from an edible mushroom when it is is such poor condition. It may be contaminated with bacteria from its surroundings. Cook thoroughly indeed.

If this is the same Honey fungus that i'm thinking about (confirm SJ?) then my primary concern would be for the welfare of any established shrubs or trees (especially fruit trees) in the vicinity. Get rid of it.

no offense to anybody here but i have stated on more than one occasion that I WILL NOT BE EATING THESE MUSHROOMS. my elderly father was curious as to what they were.

Sorry Fastdub you have joined the forum, not introduced yourself and launched straight into a "my Dad is going to eat these" post about unknown fungi (you didn't say he was just curious, look back at your postings - you stated that he WAS going to eat them).

We don't want to see anybody get poisoned/die so if we come across a bit strong on threads like this then so be it. Far better than to say, "oooh I'm not sure, why not have a little nibble and see if it tastes nice" and be all polite about it.

Hang about and you'll find we are not horrid here at all. Well not often. Only when it involves trying to save lives.

A dick-head I may be, but I am a dick-head who has eaten hundreds of wild mushrooms and I am still a living dick-head. Clearly I have at least some idea what I'm talking about.

I stand by what I said. Those who cannot tell the difference between an oyster mushroom and honey fungus are clearly not in possession of the required expertise to justify the picking and eating of wild mushrooms. Can you tell a cat from a dog? Because that is the category of mistake being made here. Pleurotus and Armillaria aren't even in the same family and they do not physically resemble each other in any but the most superficial way. Mushroom identification (or the identification of any living thing for that matter) depends upon the close observation of sometimes very minute differences. If you can't even spot the enormous difference between these species, then you are not even close to being skilled enough to consider eating wild mushrooms. To do so would be potentially lethal folly. Mushroom poisoning is not just dangerous, it can kill you in the most awful way, replete with agonised screaming, blood and horror. I would prefer that someone take offence at my words above seeing them or their relatives die in agony.

I may come across as brusque, but if someone is behaving foolishly and dangerously, it behoves those who know better to tell them that their behaviour is foolish and dangerous before they do themselves harm. Failure to do so would be negligent. Sugar-coating the truth in such a situation is not appropriate.

My advice, as always; more of this :study: , less of this :pukeright: .

Oh, and Old Jerry makes a good point; Honey Fungus is a rampant destroyer of trees. If it's in a garden, the owner may well want to get rid of it before it does for a beloved tree. There are companies that specialise in this.

Oh no!!!!! But where are the pixies going to sit? :( :(

Incidentally, I couldn't agree more. Do not pee about with potentially poisonous pixie-seats.
