A dick-head I may be, but I am a dick-head who has eaten hundreds of wild mushrooms and I am still a living dick-head. Clearly I have at least some idea what I'm talking about.
I stand by what I said. Those who cannot tell the difference between an oyster mushroom and honey fungus are clearly not in possession of the required expertise to justify the picking and eating of wild mushrooms. Can you tell a cat from a dog? Because that is the category of mistake being made here.
Pleurotus and
Armillaria aren't even in the same family and they do not physically resemble each other in any but the most superficial way. Mushroom identification (or the identification of any living thing for that matter) depends upon the close observation of sometimes very minute differences. If you can't even spot the enormous difference between these species, then you are not even close to being skilled enough to consider eating wild mushrooms. To do so would be potentially lethal folly. Mushroom poisoning is not just dangerous, it can kill you in the most awful way, replete with agonised screaming, blood and horror. I would prefer that someone take offence at my words above seeing them or their relatives die in agony.
I may come across as brusque, but if someone is behaving foolishly and dangerously, it behoves those who know better to tell them that their behaviour is foolish and dangerous before they do themselves harm. Failure to do so would be negligent. Sugar-coating the truth in such a situation is not appropriate.
My advice, as always; more of this

, less of this

.
Oh, and Old Jerry makes a good point; Honey Fungus is a rampant destroyer of trees. If it's in a garden, the owner may well want to get rid of it before it does for a beloved tree. There are companies that specialise in this.
