T&M seeds

Post: # 213045Post Odsox »

Some of you will remember that I bought some T&M butternut squash seed that was supposedly F1 seed but turned out somewhat differently than they should.
Well, I just realised that it has happened again !
I have been harvesting my yellow peppers for quite a while now and have only just twigged that I bought RED pepper seed. Sure enough when I raked out the packet, I supposedly bought "Tasty Grill Red F1 Hybrid" with a pretty picture on the front depicting RED peppers, that are probably really tasty when you grill them ... but I shall never know.
I think I probably bought about 10 packets of T&M seeds this year and that means 20% were just plain wrong, not my idea of how to run a multinational company.
I complained with several emails last time and it took several weeks to get a reply, so I don't think I will bother this time. I have my 2011 seed order written down and ... surprise, T&M aint getting any more of my money.

It's very annoying.
I've not had the problem with T&M but I bought loads of seed from Edwin Tucker for this year and several have been completely wrong.
Won't be buying from them next (this) year.

Yellow peppers are tastier than red ones so be grateful!

The only problem I've had with T&M which has annoyed me is the lack of seed in the packets! That year I also cursed their sweetcorn for not germinating but of course over the years I've learned that is a problem with any sweetcorn seeds. But now I know the secret for getting them to germinate it doesn't matter who I buy seeds from now.

But I do think you should complain to them and let them know.

I've never had a problem with them - neither has a friend of mine who buys most of her seeds from them for her veg growing business. I don't think we should judge from just one bad experience. I had a packet of dud runner beans this years - from neither of the companies mentioned here.

The thing is Ina, it's not one bad experience ... but TWO in one year.
But the real problem is the fact that both packets of seeds were F1 hybrid seeds, the ones you pay a good deal extra for to get uniform plants, the ones that are carefully hand pollinated to get uniform plants.
As far as I'm concerned it is verging on fraudulent behaviour.

Funny you should say that - I bought some Early Purple Sprouting Brocolli seeds from T&M - they claimed there were 450 seeds in the packet. Sad, I know, but I counted them (I was VERY bored) and there were, in fact, 213. Considerably less after I knocked half of them on the floor when they caught on my sleeve; and still enough for my use; but not the point.

In contrast, I bought 'approximately 45' chard seeds from Mr Fothergills and got more than 70!

Hee hee, there's always too many or not enough - who would ever need, even over say 4 years, that many PSB seeds/plants  yet it's things like sweetcorn where one could do with more than 30 seed in the packet.

Too true - if you're like me and hate throwing seed away and so feel compelled to grow the same variety for years as a result of a big packet of seed, try moreveg. Sensible sized packets at a sensible price imho
