I shop via honesty boxes, my local health food / greengrocer and my Organic Butchers every week and spend around about the same amount as I would in a Supermarket for and I certainly don't come home with half of the crap I used to just because it's there on the shelf.

It's a million times better quality too but then I suppose they were targeting the 25p / 20 pack of fish finger brigade who wouldn't know decent food if it jumped up and bit them on the @ss!

Grrr... the media make my blood boil!
What the Mail hates (or, more particularly, what their readership fears) is non-conformity.

I'm afraid that growing your own vegetables and meat, baking your own bread and generally behaving with half an eye to the general wellbeing of the planet and those who occupy scares the bejesus out of these people.

Almost as much as gypsies turning up on the village green do.

They deserve more pity than censure, not least because it might annoy them more.

I knew there was a reason I didn't waste money on newspapers. What a truly stupid article. :angryfire:

I think you are right Riff Raff Element, they just don't like people who don't conform, either that or they simply don't have any good part of society to be picking on at the moment.

I posted my little rant on their website too. So if you see Sarah from London, it was me. Let them chew/choke on it for a while.

also i notice they've not mentioned what a con Calgon is.... i did some maths a few years ago and worked out that if you ut the recommended amount of calgon in each wash, over two years of NOT using it, you could save and buy a new machine every two years.... i know shitty for the environment, but think of all the barbeques.

Another and perhaps the MAIN reason for hating the DM is that they are mean to Stephen Fry. :angryfire:

This is his blog page where he replied to their article (about his protest against the Pope's state visit)

http://www.stephenfry.com/2010/09/16/dailymailhate/

Ony he could denounce them with such eloquence... brilliant

I'm talking about me, Mrs H, because unlike you lot I can't sell eggs. Everybody in rural France has hens!

And I love reading the Daily Mail showbiz gossip - gotta keep up with who's who!! But of course I don't have a problem with this newspaper having been brought up on it as it was my grandfather's paper all the years he lived with us!

It's great entertainment reading rubbish like that.

Did you notice the cute chick in the first photo is the author...Jenny Stocks.
Did she really try her hand at self-Selfsufficiency, or did she just get her calculator out
and make up a bunch of Lies. The Media LIES in the US too.
The trick is to read it as "Entertainment" only.
A great piece of fiction, it is.

The article about us bloody pagans is hilarious!!!! She picked a bunch of disillusioned Wiccans with their cauldrons oot!.............enough said! I love the way that 'pagan' now seems to mean Wiccan (great marketing by the Wiccans, I guess, but I imagine the Druids, the Heathens etc are furious). One is cross.
I took my dog to play frisbee. She was useless. I think I need a flatter dog.

In fairness they did pick generally food that is not rubbish, Bon Maman Jam is excellent. If they had compared it to mixed fruit preserve at 29p a jar then that would have been unfair.

As always though the "facts" as stated can be argued to be correct. Personally I can't see it's right to call readers idiots, proud Artisan Manufacturers guilty of making "shite" and say that £2 for a jar of high fruit Jam with only natural ingredients expensive. To be fair Caroline your statement doesn't really help, as it is easily more biased and "jingoistic" than much of the Mails writings........

And I don't belive you made me say that about the DM, I feel all dirty now! :santa:

I know it's pulp journalism, but the economics in that article stink.

As an example, I'd wager that many people who keep hens also grow spuds.

I reckon that my flock of ten layers, one OAP I can't seem to catch and a louche cockeral cost me about €600 per year. That's imported feed, bedding, stock replacement, the odd repair and the initial cost of the hen house & fencing amortised over ten years. I should strictly included lost interest on the money I spent, I suppose, but that would be chicken feed. Boom boom.

In return, I get about 1800 eggs (so 30 cents per egg - not so far removed from the cost of free range eggs in the supermarket here) and a great deal of manure.

This manure is all I need for growing my 200 odd kilos of spuds, which I am confident more than offsets the €30 or so I spend on seed potatoes. Since I consider my labour to be free (I couldn't earn any more than I do by working more hours), my spuds are therefore free, which brings the cost of my eggs, I reckon, well below the price in the shops.

Economics. It's a game.

Ok so buying stuff in the supermarket may cost less than making/growing it your self etc - but the stuff thy sell isn't as fresh as digging it out of your own garden or baking it your self and it's full of cr*p in order to keep it looking fresh after 3 weeks,it doesn't taste as good, it's not as filling and by the time the veg have hit the shop they've been picked so long and travelled so far they are nutritionally questionable. They also seemed to pick the most expensive ways of doing it yourself - buying fertilizer, buckets, goat sheds etc - they clearly haven't heard of freecycle or sweet talking some manure from your local stables. Buying raspberry plants? Whats wrong with foraging for fruit to make jam with? Buying the sugar - why not in bulk - that works out cheaper than buying it one bag at a time from the stupidmarket! They also failed to add in the cost of travel to the shops and the fact that once there you are lured into their BOGOF offers and end up spending far more than you really wanted to in the first place! What about the pleasure and satisfaction gained from producing your own food etc? How sad that these people seem to spend a lot of time shut up in inhospitable, noisy, stale aired, crowded, stressful environments - ie shops - and call it pleasure, rather than getting their hands dirty and breathing the fresh air! They may well have used "facts" to wite this article - but they haven't used realities! I wonder if they ever totted up the cost of watching the World Cup on tv? Buy the time you've bought the telly, licence, arm chair, the beers, the snacks , lost wages for the days you took off to watch it - oh and the house!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!
