recommend a stock pot please

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

recommend a stock pot please

Post: # 218378Post Rosendula »

Not exactly "What's in the Pot?", more "What Pot?"

My stock pot isn't big enough and I'm thinking of buying another. I found some Buckingham stainless steel stockpots on ebay and amazon, but a lot of the reviews say they're very thin metal and lightweight :? . I use my current stockpot for jam making as well as stock and I'm hoping to do the same with my new one when I get it. I suppose I could still use my old one for jam, but that means storing both and I was hoping to give my old one away if I get a new one.

Can anyone recommend a brand for me please?

Although I have 2 large stock pots - I tend to use my large slow cooker instead!

Look for anything that's made of 18/10 stainless steel. That should last you a lifetime, I think.

If you want it for Jam you really need a thick base, which stops the stock/jam sticking.

Le Cruet (sp?) I have an old one and it's great for stock, but to small for Jam. My Jam pan I bought from an old fashioned hardware store ages ago, it has a thick copper base and a pouring spout and a handle, it is equally good for stock though.

Second hand one I would go for an old pressure cooker off of the 70's, gets the stock boiling quickly, is big enough for Jam, and the old ones seem to last forever.

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

i have an old enamel one that does the job really well and another slightly smaller with a heavy bottom for my jam making.

i second the idea of getting a secondhand pressure cooker- my grandad has one and uses the pan regularly for stock and its big enough to feed an army!

Ditto all the above,2nd hand pressure cookers < £5 from boot sales, you can use them as an ordinary pot if they look a bit dodgy.

Back in the day of yore, we cooked in any old pan, mainly alluminium(?) but when we got married in 1987 I bought myself a set of Stellar pans. A frying pan, 3 pans, a stock pot and a strainer. They cost an arm and a leg back then but they are still being use today and they have been burnt, dropped, thrown about ( all by Mrs BA when she has ventured into the kitchen on 3 occasions).

Totally recomend this range.

I bought a huge cast iron pot with stainless steel lid from ikea about two years ago, i think it may be this one http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50087699 or very similar. Its the best pot I've ever bought, I've made huge batches of marmalade in it and fantastic for curry's and the like as it doesn't stick
