I love small village rumours - they always make the people who started them look really stupid - it may take time but it will happen!
When I first moved in here I found out that there was a rumour going round the village that I slept naked in my conservatory  What amused me was that there could only have been one person who could actually see into my conservatory and even then he'd have to be hanging out of his upstairs window for large amounts of time in order to see me! When I heard the rumour I said as much and added that he must have a very boring sad life, and a rather unsuccessful business, if that was all he had to do! The rumours stopped after that!
On another occasion I found out that m XMIL was telling people that the reason my marriage broke up was becasue there was another man involved. So I simply said that if she believed that to be true then she could - but I could say, hand on heart, that it wasn't me who had another man! Again - the rumours stopped pretty quick!
I guess what I'm saying is that people who spead rumours have something bigger to hide themselves and it's pretty easy to work out what it is!
Keep your chin up hun - and feel sorry for the sad life of the person who's saying that nasty stuff! :hugish:
Oops - many crossed posts!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free

It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Thanks folks, that really cheered me up. Susie, if you fancy swinging at any time I'll meet you in the local park - that's the only swinging I do (and then only when no-one's looking!)

You're right millims - some of the people in the village have a vague inkling that we're going into some form of food production (we've kept it all fairly quiet) and I'm guessing because they don't know much they're feeling threatened so the rumours can help stymie us and protect their interests.

Or maybe it wasn't even intended to be malicious, maybe it's just an of the cuff remark that's got out of hand. I just worry about our fledgling business, like I said, if we can't get locals buying from us it has no hope. My biggest hope (apart from DD earning a living) was that it would bring locals into the craft village - not many come in now.

Maggie - I think you need to get out there onto the streets with big rainbow rasta hats and wigs and huge flairs and splifs to advertise you and your daughter's business. You will shock their small minds into laughter and they will buy from you ever more! Just lace their bread with a bit ganga and they will happily come back to you time for immemorial.

Whaddya mean no drug problem????

I've heard on the grapevine that there's somone started a cannabis farm in a disused building.

Ignore it GA - it's fairly normal village tittle-tattle.

Unfortunately this is so. What you could do is suggest to your "friend" that if people are so sure there's a drug factory there then perhaps they should call the police. If they're not so sure, on the other hand, then they could do well to bear in mind the law regarding slander.

That would also be my way to handle it, I think.

I've slept on it and taken all your advice on board and decided to more or less let it pass - I'll deal with one person with a bit of aversion therapy a la rre but I'm not bothered about anyone else.

I had a chat with a couple of friends here last night one of whom suggested I made a posting on the Durness page on Uncyclopaedia (sp?) saying the cannabis crop had failed but the anthrax had blossomed - but then decided that wasn't any better an advert for a budding food emporium either.

your post made me chuckle Green aura. I've heard sutherland even worse than here. lol I once got asked by a council official, "are you a cult?" Needless to say I nearly peed mysel laughing at him. He felt like a right tit. They grow veg, plant trees, live in wigwams and there are lots of hippie types coming and going he was told... rumour has it we're a cult. Best part about it is I got it in writing too. Love showing that one to people. lmao. that was years ago tho and whoever started that one must feel like a total idiot. Best off to ignore smallminded folk and have a good laugh about it whilst yer at it.

You realise what this means, though? It means that, once the rumours have died down (as they usually do), you can start a cannabis farm safe in the knowledge that no-one will take the idea seriously any more. Bonus!

(If it's anything like the rural Scotland I know, they were probably hoping... )
Cheers
