safe food

Post: # 221833Post paul123456 »

Hello there ,

since the dioxin scandal in Germany we have been forced to look into alternative ways of buying meat .
first decision is to eat less meat and then only 6 times a week .And eat more fish ( is this safe ?)
Second , we have looked and found a supplier who does organic pig/pork for around 12€ a kilo .
And then we found one who does beef for 9€ a kilo , this a 1/8 of a cow , also organic.

Question are these reasonable prices ? the suppliers claim that the produce is organic , but is this to be trusted at these prices?
The co op I buy chicken food from also declares that what they sell is "clean" , seeing that this is only grain and not processed feed I think it is .
Anyone experience with these prices and so ?

regards ,

Paul

Only 6 times a week :D?? That's a lot of meat...

About the dioxin scandal:
It doesn't matter if they are organically fed or not, it matters if they have been fed feed that contains contaminations. Germany is a big country on organics and they export a lot of animal feed. If you want to be sure, you need to be certain that the meat you buy wasn't raised on contaminated feed. Buy locally produced meat, where you can contact the farm and ask them what they feed their animals with. Locally grown organic feeds should be safe.

If you want to be absolutely certain, I suggest going for self sufficiency on veggies, chickens, goats and the stuff you feed the animals with. Hunt for wild meat and catch wild fish.

In the UK you can call your chickens organic so long as you feed them with feed with a minimum of 10% organically grown feed.

Short of actually rearing your own livestock I don't think anyone can be sure of having "safe food", sorry.

Really? I didn't know about that 10% feed = organic.. thats nothing short of a rip off scandal! surely paying for organic meat it should be 100% organic as are veggies and other food products... I have to hazard a guess now that Organic Milk the cows are on 10% organic feed and 90% normal feed that has being melded in some way or another.

I am so blinking glad I am now though a period of transition to raising my own chickens for my kitchen table.
