Horseradish greens

Post: # 229682Post MKG »

I've just discovered that horseradish leaves are edible. Anyone ever tried them?

No. But I'd really like to. Every bloody year at this place 2 sheep break in off the common and make a beeline for the HR ,eat the leaves down (and now it's netted, still take the tops off) and then bugger off back to the common. So obviously they taste great!!!

Aww, I didn't know that! Mike do you use them in raw in salads, or steamed?

Mine is just starting to sprout leaves this year so it needs a quick tidy up tomorrow - it'll be worth watching though & trying it out.

I don't know, Julie - hence the post

Mine is 18" high - perhaps that Irish climate isn't everything it's claimed to be?

But I can imagine a salad leaf with that kind of bite - I hope. Knowing my luck, it'll be a sad substitute for lettuce.

I over-wintered the turkeys in the veg patch Mike & I think they took quite a shine to the poor horseradish foliage!!

It's just a shame that the birds don't like ground elder quite as much

How about bubble and squeak? .......http://www.eatweeds.co.uk/horseradish-l ... and-squeak

I have a recollection that the navy used to use it (or one from the same family) to prevent scurvy as it's very high in vitamin C.

Well, I just chomped half a leaf. It's OK. not much taste to begin with, but then a horse-radishy aftertaste and warmth. Nowhere near as peppery as a nasturtium leaf, but not bad at all.
