Yeah .. new potatoes

Post: # 230424Post Odsox »

Dug my first new potatoes for dinner tonight.
Not a great yield but nice sized and just about right for the two of us.

Also picked my first strawberry (just the one), so OH can have singular strawberry and cream for pud.
Next Sunday should see the first pick of peas, so it's all beginning to become interesting again.

Ha! OH has just informed me he's dug up 2 small Roosters out of the polytunnel - it'll be slim picking unless he finds some more though - we're out until I go to Inverness next weekend

Oh dear, poor you.
I've got a 10 foot row of those Charlottes, which should keep us going till the next lot are ready the first week of June.
Plus I've still got about half a hundredweight of wrinkly last years ones for roasties, so nah nah nanah na. :tongue3:

Odsox,
When exactly did you plant this crop of potatoes? I've planted spuds almost a couple of months ago...not sure when to dig them up exactly. Our potatoes have been blooming for a week or so.

Regards,
Chuck

Not too sure with your climate Chuck, but early potatoes here, where it is pretty chilly at times in spring, the rule of thumb is 12 weeks from planting to digging, but if yours are flowering I think I would be tempted to have a poke about under one plant.
Those Charlottes were planted on the 3rd of February but clearly they could have been started a week or two ago.

Yay at least I beat your with my first strawberry on 30th April! Would have been a few days before but the birds ate them as I hadn't got to netting them as everything is about 3 weeks early.

Well done Tony with the spuds though  - I am finding myself horribly drawn to them with tongue hanging out when I see them in the supermarket - no way am I going to buy any though  . In fact I looked at price of French beans in the s/m and they were over €8 a kilo!!! Jeez. (and from Kenya which is very unusual here as normally they are from Morocco out of season).

Me too, and OH dug up an enormous Desiree from veg patch the other day which was in much better nick! How he missed something that size I don't know! I must start to supervise better.

I did succumb, and bought new potatoes, when I had friends to lunch last weekend - drenched in melting butter they were lovely! I planted mine on 3 April and wondered how long I had to wait, but see that it's 12 weeks, so I may have to succumb again.

I bought some locally grown Amandine variety this week and they are delicious. These were tiny spuds - sort of like a mini Charlotte - ideal for a potato salad. I'm going to look out for this variety as it seems an ideal early early to grow.

Erm Mrs M I've grown Amandine, and whilst tasty, they were ENORMOUS. So I kind of missed out on my tiny new spuds that year. :( I think there must a very little window of time to get them out before they turn into giants. :dontknow:

Well done, they look lovely.

I am so behind with everything this year, my peas are only 6 inches tall. Am planting runner and french beans out this weekend, along with all squashes and outside cucs. Hoping no frost in May!

But we do have a tiny harvest of new pots which I grew in a large plastic tub. Will be having them tonight with roast mackerel. Mmmmm

Other pots are taking ages in the garden - they went in about mid march.

Well done, your pots look lovely, I used to grow them years ago and you have inspired me to grow them again, I can just taste them boiling hot and drenched in butter :)
