I have been digging through one of our raised beds which had potatoes in it last year. there were several potato plants in it but I needed the ground for something else so they got chucked to the next bed along... as I was going though, there were several decent sized spuds amongst it all so I put them to one side to have for tea (I usually do this when digging over the beds as potatoes seem to grow everywhere in my plot now)
No idea what the variety was, they were normal looking, white skin maybe arran pilot, maybe maris peer, I do on occassion plant out supermarket 'white potatoes' if they have sprouted in the cupboard. they were definitely not king edwards or desiree (that is the only types I have ever planted)
Anyway, we boiled these potatoes for mash and I left OH to it... he kept shouting to me in the next room that they weren't mashing very well and when I came into the kitchen the gloop was so disgusting looking I have no idea what happened.
It was gooey, excessivley so, with stings of gloop coming when you pulled the masher away and the bits that weren't goo were really lumpy... basically it was disgusting and got composted
Any idea?

Re: Potato problem
It sounds like they're extra startchy. I find some supermarket's own whites do get a gluey consistency when cooked cause of the starch in them. Especially if you try mashing with anything other than a bog standard hand masher. Maybe stick to baking those ones.
