Early Mid Life Crisis

Post: # 237524Post bonniethomas06 »

Oh my word, I just handed in my notice! I made a decision the other day:

Woke up after having had a dream where I was a florist, getting flowers ready for a wedding, and thouroughly enjoyed it.

Perhaps it is something to do with approaching 30 this year, but decided that (admittedly only recently having qualified) I hate being a laywer, hate lawyers and love flowers.

So have found a fab part time job 3 days a week doing a job where I can use my legal training without being a lawyer (as a contracts manager) and have two spare days a week to go to college and do floristry! Have already started work experience on Saturday mornings at a local florist and I love it. In fact I opened the chiller the other day to be confronted with a wall of various blooms and almost burst into tears, they were sooo pretty.

My finances are going to be tighter than a gnats bumhole for a couple of years as it is a pay cut (come to think of it, for the rest of my life as it doesn't seem to be very well paid), but I suddenly feel in control of my life again and am pleased I have finally admitted to myself that flowers ARE important :flower:

Just felt like announcing! Am I nuts? My civil servant father thinks I am having an early mid-life crisis.

Bonnie, I've never been a lawyer but I used to work with a big bunch of them, and I think if you really like being a lawyer it's a wonderful job: if you don't, it really really really isn't, and the stress is horrendous, I saw some of them break and it wasn't pretty. I think you would know if it was going to be for you for the rest of your life, and it isn't, and you've made an excellent decision to do something you're excited by. Congratulations, good work!

And don't worry about gnats' bumholes, it'll work out. If you're doing something you love, the sky's the limit.

It does no-one any good at all to spend a life doing something you don't particularly enjoy. It took me a lot longer to realise that than it has you. Well done, BT, and the best of all possible luck. At the very least, you'll be happy.

Good for you. Your legal training won't be wasted, you can always fall back on it.

I have been trying to get out of accountancy for the last 10 years and have never quite had the guts to do what you did so I really admire you.

I've come to the conclusion that I am now too old to have a mid life crisis. From what I can gather us blokes are suppose to get divorced and buy a fast motorcycle or suchlike. Well I've always have had the bikes and have never married. So its a bit of a no brainer for me.
Anyway congratulations on your bid to jump off the treadmill. I intend to try to do so myself in the next few years, all being well.
Has anyone seen the plot, I seem to have lost mine?

I have noticed that on Masterchef and such like there are always a plethora of young lawyers desperate to get out and get into a poorly paid but more "real" and creative career so if you are nuts then so are many many other young lawyers!Congratulations on having the courage of your convictions and don't let other people's fears hold YOU back from living YOUR life the way you want to!
We left secure civil service jobs which were well enough paid but sooo boring and soul destroying and have started our own business, there are big ups and big downs and being on the bones of our bums but I could never go back to a job like we had before.
Having money is nice but being real and present in your life is priceless!

ETA: I am 30 as well and had my "mid life" crisis at around 25!

Well done for making the decision so quickly. You could have spent many more years of your life doing something you hate.
