Hello hello!

Post: # 240095Post Ischaria »

Hey everyone,

Im Ischaria! Im a 25 year old guy just about to embark on a PhD at UCL in london. This essentially means 4 years of having absolutely no money. I've been scratching my head trying to think of ways to cut costs, and it occurred to me that when I used to live opposite a T***o I was watching them throw out an absurd amount of food. On an almost daily basis they throw out loads of bread, eggs, vegetables, frozen meals etc, and all this while were facing some fairly severe side effects from living our cosy western lifestyles. I read a nice quote from somewhere - "unlike the government, nature doesnt bail you out".

Anyway Ive figured that for as much time as possible I'm going to live for free off other peoples waste. Im guessing this is going to involve hours of me rummaging through bins in a supermarket carpark, but im kinda excited! After a bit of internet searching I was encouraged to find that other people actually choose to live like this and so was hoping that if any of you have any tips or advice, you could pass them on to a newbie. EDIT - ive just been having a read through the forum, does anyone do this here?

Im also going to be trying to grow vegetables, homebrew beer and generally make as much of the stuff I use by myself. So if any of you have any advice on this also, then hit me up!

Talk to ya all soon

Welcome and good luck with your venture. Try not to poison yourself in the process.

BTW, dumpster diving is actually illegal in the UK.

Hi there and welcome
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

So glad to hear from a fellow 'Fregan',
Yes! I try to live from waste & to also share things found, when I can. I would not actually get into a dumpster. Last night I rescued loads of perfect items from landfill, thrown out by a charity shop. I was furious at the waste & will redonate a lot of it elswhere.
I haven't used dumpsters on private land, they are all locked up round here anyway. If you are caught, you could try saying that you are looking for a box to send your mother's birthday present.
I am looking at folding litter picker type grabbers on ebay but don't know which style is best & hopefully cheap.
