Broken Kitty!

Post: # 242417Post Loobyloo »

Hi Folks,

Found out yesterday that nancy (aka the Chubster) has managed to break her femur, right at the top directly underneath the ball joint. She has to go back to the vets for an operation on friday to remove the broken bit so the top of the femur will go into the socket without the ball, apparently there's no other option.

Has anyone else had experience of this in a cat, am worried about how it will heal and how much of a problem this could be for the future. She's only just over a year old! Poor baby. :pale:

Any advice welcome!

Ow! Your poor Cat!
I've just googled this procedure: http://www.2ndchance.info/hipsurgery.htm and it seems to be a very successful option.

Hope she responds well to treatment :thumbright:

Aw, thanks for the sympathy guys, and Davie that link is great thank you!! :hugish:

I'm just worried about trying to stop her moving around too much and jumping up on stuff. At the moment the vet has said that she can't do any more damage so not to worry about limiting her movement and apart from a limp you wouldnt know there was anything wrong! She's running about and jumping up as normal!

Bless, I don't think she's going to know whats hit her after the op. She's going to have a baldy bum for ages too as she's long haired!

Few years back, our young cat disappeared, for two days, we found her behind an old door in the shed, with a broken tali and unable to stand, we rushed her to the vet, who found that she had broken her hips, he operated on her hips and put her tail in a splint, and today she do'es every thing that cats do, albeit, with her back legs splayed out.
Incidently, she was found in a plastic bag in a wheelie bin when she was a kitten, she seems no worse for either experience.
I can't do great things, so I do little things with love.

hope kitty is ok...

cat's are pretty resiliant, we have one (found as a stray) who has a 3-inch tail after an arguement with a big dog. He seemed to just get on with life (but was really funny when he was high on metacam!)

Wow, oldfella, 2 broken hips and a broken tail? Nancy's got it easy in comparison!

I'm feeling a bit less concerned than I was, thanks everyone. I'll still be worried until she's actually had the op and is awake again though.

Nancy had her operation this morning and it went well, I'll be picking her up after work and giving her lots of (gentle!) huggles.

Thanks for keeping me calm everyone! I would have been really nervous all morning if it hadn't been for all your advice and sympathy!

I love ish :grouphug:

You can't tell a cat to take it easy but I hope she does and gets better soon :hugish:

Hope ur kitty is doing well. We're the same as oldfella, r puss cats fell when she was 2 and broke her hips and tail. We couldn't afford to operate and the vet was excellant, we had to box rest her for 6wks and then only let her out in a small area in the evenings. Gradually we built on this and she will be 7 this month! She sits funny and gets a bit sticky in the cold weather but apart from that she's great. It aged her quite badly, she looks a lot older than 7 but she's still spritly and mischievous!! And agreed cats off there tits on metacam is quite amusing!!
Good luck to ur kitty, cats r very resilient and she will pay bac all of ur love and care a million times over. Xx
