Climbing beans didn't

Post: # 243321Post dave45 »

I planted "climbing beans" amongs a wigwam of 2m bamboo sticks, and they didn't bother climbing... stayed at ground level, poor crop and got muddy with splashed rain-water.... was I supposed to tie them in to force them to climb?.

Borlotti beans.. very pretty to look at and tasted fine.

I'm not sure about beans but many climbing plants find it difficult to get started if you don't give them a helping hand. Try tieing them in next year and see if it helps.

were they thompson and morgan by chance?

mine didn't climb this year either. my parents also bought T&M borlotti that also failed to climb this year. i must get around to writing and complaining.

really annoying as i had 3 wigwams devoted to this.. and no crop.

My Borlotti climbed, not that it seems to have done me any good. They are a mass of leaves smothering my 8' canes, a double row about 6m long. But hardly a flower on them. Whereas the butter beans, which didn't crop that well last year have been covered in flowers for ages and it appears I'm going to have a good crop. The dwarf Borlotti did fine and given a reasonable crop. All other beans have had a good year, dry when planted out to avoid the slugs but with a reasonable bit of rain since (although my runners did dry up a bit the beginning of August when I turned my back on them).

Mine stayed about 12" tall - also T&M. Didn`t even look like trying. All the other beans on the same 12`long trellis ( a mix of scarlet runners and climbing french) have done well.
