Gardening and Camera
Gardening and Camera
May I suggest that every post should have a photo(s). Gardening and Camera fit like a glove. Cameras are effortlessly to use today. Why use prose when pictures will explain?
To partially answer my own question most forums make it almost impossible to post photos with ease. The bucket system to links are terrible, since there is not a bucket program which is convenient to view.

Re: Gardening and Camera
I have trouble finding film for my Box Camera, not only that, can you tell where I can find the little hole on the camera for the plug to go in, so I can connect it to the PC.

I can't do great things, so I do little things with love.
Re: Gardening and Camera
Hang in there. Digital cameras will hit France one of these days. Maybe an immigrant will bring a few into the country, and introduce you to a whole new world..oldfella wrote:I have trouble finding film for my Box Camera, not only that, can you tell where I can find the little hole on the camera for the plug to go in, so I can connect it to the PC.![]()
Re: Gardening and Camera
Durgen - totally agree and try to fit a photo in when ever possible on my blog http://www.waark.com - but forums make it difficult.
Why do they make it difficult? it's a matter of bandwidth and server storage space. buckets are used because both of those are moved to a 3rd party. So it's cost!
My blog is my own, has unlimited space and bandwidth, so I don't run into that problem. Plus I only have about 3-400 visitors a month, only about 100 of those are regular visitors.
I have a problem with buckets because work blocks most of them, so generally I don't see a picture even if there is one, so I wish people didn't use them at all.
I do run my own image 'bucket' which is http://www.albumonline.net- but it doesn't generally allow hotlinking - you have to follow a link to the site. I could enable hotlinking for selfsufficientish though. But you'd still need to know what you're doing to use it.

Handling pictures for blogs and forums and Email.
Get a domain, internet host. I use Midphase for about 7.00 per month.
http://www.midphase.com/website-hosting ... osting.php
Buy Breezebrowser for handling your pictures on your computer. This creates the HTML pages and stores your pictures. I store by year, month, day , and name. This is the best software for handling pictures. I have tried them all. You can annotate, watermark, store easily, and HTML with ease.
http://www.breezesys.com/BreezeBrowser/
Upload your photos to tour web host using an FTP program. Firefox has a plug in.
I use a separate FTP program. https://shopft.ipswitch.com/campaign/cpus.html
Shorten your URL's by many of the free systems or buy your own. I use.
http://www.gentlesource.com/short-url-script/
For the blog I use Wordpress. Simple to use and never fails.
http://wordpress.org/download/
My blog for pictures is not cluttered and there are hundreds of pictures. From a shoot to placing on the internet takes a few minutes.
Example. http://www.durgan.org/URL/?YIZEK 18 December2011 Elderberry(Sambucus canadensis) This is the short URL
http://www.durgan.org/2011/September%20 ... uice/HTML/ This is the long URL
The pictures are easy to view and much information can be supplied, since many pictures can be used. All picture sent by Email use the same system. All this software is relatively low cost. The learning curve only takes a bit of application.

I like your yard. Your blog has merit but is deficient in pictures. Videos are a pain in the azz compared to many stills. My view.tim_n wrote:Durgen - totally agree and try to fit a photo in when ever possible on my blog http://www.waark.com - but forums make it difficult.

Re: Gardening and Camera
Thanks for having a look! - deficient in pictures? I only put one or two up, more if I think a process needs it etc. I do videos with my timelapse camera because, well, they're timelapse :)
I did have a looky on your blog as I'd seen a few posts on the forum. I didn't really 'get' the image link (I thought it was spam at first) but I ventured in and it was good, but because it opens on a seperate page (I have to remember to right click open in new window/tab) I found it hard to relate to what I was reading. But that's because we've got two different blogs - yours is to the point and informs with pics - mine tells a story and rambles, mainly because I do - just different places!
I generally blog whilst I'm gardening - so I take pictures with my phone and upload it with my ramblings whilst I'm out in the garden. I don't really get time to sit behind my Mac because I'm out and about - and the iphone doesn't really support FTP that well.
I use dreamhost - £65-95 a year depending on exchange rates. More like £95 these days - but I host 300 web sites for charities, so it's a bargain.

Re: Gardening and Camera
The forum software screws up the link by removing the formatting to open in a new window automatically. Many forums don't modify the link. But those young programmers get taught one thing and never change. There are some forums that don't allow external links. Imagine!
Newspapers all are still in the stone age regarding their handling of pictures.

Re: Gardening and Camera
So why is this Real Ale Group muscling in on our forum?
Pictures are great, but prose in better.
There is nothing more boring than someone else's holiday snaps, but them telling you about what they got up to, great.
That of course is only my opinion. All this talk of computers and programing etc makes my head hurt.

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Re: Gardening and Camera
I got lost when you started talking about buckets.
I upload my photos to Picasaweb which is brilliant as it automatically shrinks your photo size without losing clarity so now saves me tons of time from doing it all manually in Paint Shop Pro and having to save a 2nd smaller image (and having to sharpen it as they lose clarity when reduced).
Problem is I can't upload to either Facebook or Google+ this way, so still have to do the manual reduction.
Here's a photo to make you happy Durgan.

I like words because if you don't like what youa re reading you don't hacve to read it all, with pictures you get all the info in one go whether you like it or not.
Pictures have their place if they help the viewer understand the context better, but I would be very sad if we all only posted photos without words.

I am just suggesting a better method.
Example. http://www.durgan.org/URL/?YIZEK 18 December2011 Elderberry(Sambucus canadensis) This is the short URL
Your photo is fine, but using the method I propose takes almost the same time as or your one photo. Also viewing is at your own pace, simply click next and the photos may be viewed quickly with no distracting time in loading and NO ADVERTISING unless put amongst the photos.
To use prose and one obscure photo to describe a plant is not very informative. The internet has not been fully utilized using photo due to various misery in preparing. My method removes all of these obstacles. The plant photo on the internet are collectively very poor. It is very difficult to identify a plant from one photo.
Look on this forum. I still haven't seen an allotment garden with thousands of posts. One has to use his imagination in determining what the UK looks like due to lack of pictures in a palatable form.

Not suggesting posting without words. I am suggesting posting many picture in ready form, with quick easy viewing, to supplement the prose. And in ease of preparing on your own computer. Some garden books are still using drawings to depict plants for example.Helsbells wrote:I like words because if you don't like what youa re reading you don't hacve to read it all, with pictures you get all the info in one go whether you like it or not.
